Friends and family in NJ should consider taking advantage of the incentives that are available from the federal and state governments to switch to solar. The federal government gives a federal tax credit of 26% of the cost of the solar array. The state of NJ also gives a TREC of $152 x .6 = $91.20 for every KWH of solar electricity that’s produced for a 15 year period from when the system is installed. The average home in NJ with solar has a 12.1 KWH system that produces 13.31 KWH of electricity in the first year of production.

13.310 KWH / 1,000 = 13.31 = 13 TRECS

$152 per TREC x 13 TRECS x .6 = $1,186

The homeowner will get approximately $1,186 per year for 15 years = $17,790

Keep in mind that the federal government gives every homeowner in the country a 26% federal tax credit for the cost of the solar array. That’s only until the end of 2022 and then it reduces to 22% until the end of 2023 and then it goes to ZERO!

For those homeowners who are considering converting to solar power, the installation must be completed by the end of the year, to be able to take advantage of the 26% federal investment tax credit on their 2021 tax return! Otherwise they’ll have to wait until they file their 2022 tax return in 2023. Another thing to keep in mind is that the 26% federal investment tax credit is being reduced to 22% after 12/31/22 and then it expires on 12/31/23 unless it’s extended.
