I really love working on antique commercial equipment. This time I was working on a Hobart mixer from the 50s. Unknown until after disassembly, this is a rare “diving key” transmission. The only hint as to how it is assembled and operates is a hand drawn exploded view. Searching the internet brings up only one piece of info. A video showing “diving key transmission disassembly.”But he only takes it out as a whole unit and says, whatever you do, don’t take this apart because no one knows how to put it back together. Well, this unit had its grease contaminated with oil and so it had to be fully disassembled and all traces of oil cleaned out. It also had a broken diving key armature and damper spring, so it absolutely had to come apart. I turned to Hobarts helpful parts department who got me in contact with someone who has worked on diving key transmissions, 6 of them… in his life… over 8 years ago when he worked in the field. He couldn’t remember much about how they worked. So I had to just logic my way through it. Once I figured it out, I made my own video since all I found about it online were other people wondering how it works. It’s all back together now, packed with beautiful blue grease and smooth in all 3 gears! I’m feeling so proud of myself right now!

This one was a challenge (as seen in my sellf satisfied grin) since the part with the issue was not anywhere on the wiring diagram and had no part number on it. But the no start condition was solved and Dennis and Jonni are back on their way to Texas after their unintentionally extended visit to Port Townsend! We also found an impending problem that would've left them stranded along the way and it was fixed before it failed for an extra win!
