October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

The Port Washington Fire Department proudly recognizes October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and stands with all those affected by breast cancer.

As firefighters and emergency responders, we are exposed to numerous occupational hazards, including carcinogens that can increase our risk of developing cancer. Cancer is one of the leading health risks facing firefighters, making prevention, early detection, and regular medical screenings especially important.

We encourage everyone to:
• Know your risk factors and family history
• Follow recommended screening guidelines
• Schedule regular checkups with your healthcare provider
• Talk with your doctor about any changes or concerns

Early detection can save lives. Don’t wait—get checked.

This month, we honor breast cancer survivors, remember those we have lost, and support everyone currently facing this disease.

🔥🚒 OCTOBER IS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH! 🚒🔥

This October, the Port Washington Fire Department reminds everyone that fire safety starts at home.

🏠 Make fire safety a priority:

• 🔔 Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace them as needed

• 🚪 Close bedroom doors at night to help slow the spread of smoke and fire

• 🗺️ Create a home fire escape plan and practice it with your family

• 🚨 Know two ways out of every room

• 🍳 Stay in the kitchen while cooking and keep anything that can burn away from the stove

• 🔌 Avoid overloaded outlets and damaged electrical cords

• 🔥 Keep grills a safe distance from your home and never use them indoors

• 🏃 Get out and stay out! Never go back inside a burning building

Remember:
Prevent • Prepare • Practice

A few simple steps today can make a life-saving difference tomorrow.

Free Home Fire Safety Program
Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte, in partnership with the American Red Cross on Long Island, the Port Washington Fire Department, the Port Washington Police Department, and the Sands Point Police Department, is pleased to announce a free Home Fire Safety Smoke Detector Installation & Home Safety Check for local residents on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
As part of this community safety initiative, trained volunteers will visit participating homes to install free smoke detectors and conduct a home fire safety check to help residents identify potential fire hazards and learn important steps to protect themselves, their families, and their homes.
This program is completely free and available to all residents. However, advance registration is required, and space is limited.
Residents who would like to participate are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible:

“Having working smoke detectors and knowing what to do in the event of a fire can save lives,” said Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte. “I am proud to partner with the American Red Cross and our dedicated local fire and police departments to bring this important service directly into our community. I encourage every resident to take advantage of this free program and make fire safety a priority in their home.”
The home safety visit will provide residents with practical information and resources to help reduce the risk of home fires and ensure that their smoke detectors are properly installed and functioning.
