Remembering Firefighter James Davis

Today, August 27, we remember Firefighter James Davis of the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Co.1, who died in the line of duty on August 27, 1892.

Firefighter Davis had just responded to a fire at his brother’s barn when he collapsed while pulling the rope to draw Atlantic’s fire truck.

Davis worked for many years in Port Washington as a butcher and proudly served his community as a member of the Atlantic Hook and Ladder Company #1.

We remember his service and sacrifice.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Company 2, Manhasset-Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department, the NYPD, and the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Erasmo T***a during this incredibly difficult time.

🦇 UNUSUAL RESCUE

Early this morning, the Port Washington Fire Department was requested for an unusual rescue.

A homeowner contacted Animal Control after discovering a bat inside his son’s bedroom. Animal Control advised the homeowner to contact the local fire department for assistance.

Assistant Chief Patrick Saccoccia, along with Port Washington Police officers, entered the room and carefully searched for the bat. After locating it, the window was opened and the bat was safely freed and allowed to fly out of the home.

Another unusual call for the members of the Port Washington Fire Department — because not every rescue involves fire or medical emergencies. Sometimes, we’re just there to help a little guy find his way home. 🦇

❤️‍🩹 CPR Save Recognized at St. Francis Hospital

This afternoon members of the Port Washington Fire Department were recognized for their lifesaving efforts following a successful CPR save involving a resident of the Helen Keller National Center on April 23, 2026.

EMT Rebecca Carvalho, EMT Ricaurte, and Paramedic Supervisor Gary Bartunek responded and provided critical care, including CPR, helping give the patient a second chance at life.

Also pictured are Dr. Joseph Zito, St. Francis EMS Liaison; EMS Captain Beth Weisburd; Charles Lucore, President of St. Francis Hospital; and members of the . Francis Hospital administration.

This recognition highlights the importance of rapid CPR, highly trained EMS providers, and the strong partnership between the Port Washington Fire Department and St. Francis Hospital.

We are incredibly proud of Rebecca, Daniel, and Gary for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to the residents we serve. Their actions are a powerful reminder that every second counts and CPR truly saves lives.

🇺🇸⚾️ GOOD LUCK, PORT WASHINGTON! ⚾️🇺🇸

The Port Washington Little League 12U New York State Champions are heading to Connecticut tonight to represent Port Washington and New York State in the Regional Finals!

Members of the Port Washington Fire Department, Port Washington Police Department, and representatives from the Town of North Hempstead came together to proudly send these young athletes off and wish them the very best of luck.

For the Port Washington Fire Department, this team has an especially meaningful connection. Walt Cassens, a member of this championship team, is the grandson of deceased Flower Hill Hose Company 1 member Ex-Captain & Ex-President John Olszewski. Walt is pictured with Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte.

Our community takes great pride in supporting the next generation, and tonight we’re proud to stand behind these young men as they represent our hometown on the regional stage.

Congratulations on becoming New York State Champions, and best of luck in Connecticut! Play hard, represent Port Washington with pride, and bring home the Regional Championship! 🏆🇺🇸

🎉 Happy 98th Birthday to the Port Washington Fire Department’s most senior member, Ex-Captain and Honorary Chief Joseph “Pepe” Santoli!

Chief Santoli has proudly served as a member of the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Co.1 for an incredible 79 years, dedicating nearly eight decades of service to the Port Washington community. His commitment, leadership, and unwavering devotion to the fire service have inspired generations of firefighters.

From all of us at the Port Washington Fire Department, we wish Chief Santoli a very Happy 98th Birthday and thank him for his extraordinary lifetime of service.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. this morning, the Port Washington Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle into a building at the intersection of Shore Road and Manhasset Avenue in the Village of Manorhaven.

Assistant Chief Patrick Saccoccia arrived first on scene and confirmed that a vehicle had struck and entered the building through a storefront window. Fortunately, there was no entrapment, and the vehicle’s sole occupant had self-extricated prior to the fire department’s arrival. The occupant was evaluated by EMS at the scene at released.

The Village of Manorhaven Building Inspector was requested to respond to assess the structural damage to the building.

After ensuring there were no additional hazards, no further fire department operations were required.
