If your youth athlete goes straight from school to practice and your not sure what to give them as a snack you are not alone. I often hear from athletes and parents that “lunch is early and then there isn’t time for a snack”, or an athlete has told me “I don’t like to eat at school with friends.” The good news is snacks don’t have to be complicated. The goal of the afterschool snack is to fuel their body for practice. In today’s blog post I’ll cover an easy formula to help your athletes plan a simple, balanced after school snack. https://sportsnutrition4kids.com/after-school-snacks-for-youth-athletes/

What are your youth athletes snack challenges?

If you want to raise confident and curious eaters… get your kids in the kitchen!

When they help with the prep they are more likely to try it or at least feel more comfortable with it.

Cooking together both at home and in my classes supports:
- sensory learning
- fine motor skills
- language development
- food confidence and independence

Spring classes will start soon and are available for ages 17 months- age 8. Email [email protected] to learn more!

Brownie energy balls are always a hit with my classes, and there are always many recipe requests!

They are made with a few simple ingredients and there is no baking needed.

In class we used our 5 senses to explore and learn about dates. Dates were a new food for many, from toddlers to 8 year olds!

💡 nutrition note: dates are a great source of fiber

Dates are also a quick energy source for the youth athletes I work with!

Recipe 👇

- 1.5 cups rolled oats (i like to use an ancient grain mixture for added nutrition)
- 3 TBSP cocoa powder
- 14 pitted medjool dates
- 1 TBSP maple syrup
- 2 Tbsp water
Optional ingredients include h**p seeds, crushed walnuts, dye free rainbow sprinkles
Place all ingredients other than the optional ingredients into a high powered blender. Once it’s all blended together form the energy balls and enjoy!

If you try them, comment below to let me know what you and your family think!

Exploring foods and ingredients with our 5 senses is both a fun and powerful way for kids to learn about nutrition!

In all of our classes (grown up and me, pre school, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade) we encourage students to see, smell, touch, hear and taste their food. This type or exploration helps introduce them to different ingredients and foods without the pressure and helps to build curiosity, confidence and a positive relationship with food at young ages.

As a pediatric dietitian, my goal is to make age appropriate nutrition fun and engaging. When children feel more comfortable around foods that are more likely to try them and enjoy them.

👉Let kids explore with their food!

Food art like these chocolate fruit pizza faces encourages sensory exploration — touching, smelling, and seeing often leads to tastings!

Pressure-free exposure helps kids become more comfortable with new foods and can make trying them easier over time.

Cooking and nutrition are more than just making food — they are a great way to learn!

In our classes, children practice early math and measurement skills while we cook together.

🥄 Kindergarten classes:
Students begin learning about measuring ingredients using tools like teaspoons, tablespoons, and measuring cups. They practice scooping, pouring, and talking about how much we need for a recipe.

🥣 Preschool + Grown Up & Me classes:
Younger chefs start with the basics by learning about bigger and smaller sizes while exploring different measuring cups and spoons.

Hands-on cooking helps children build confidence, independence, and early math skills — all while having fun with food!

Behind the scenes getting ready for my preschool cooking and nutrition classes today!

Our little chefs will explore new foods and practice early kitchen skills like scooping, mashing and mixing!

Today’s recipe will introduce them to new ingredients while also encouraging sensory food play as they use their hands to roll the dough.

Hands on food activities help children become more comfortable with different foods while building confidence in the kitchen.

I love bringing nutrition education and food exploration into pre school classes!

Dinner before or after practice?

I get this question from parents all. the. time.

The tricky thing is— there’s no one right answer. It depends on your schedule, your athlete, and what they’ll actually eat!

At my house, it’s usually a more filling snack before practice and dinner afterwards. My kids associate after school with snack time, and they are not interested in having a full meal. I have clients whose kids are happy to eat a real meal before practice and then a second dinner after or more of a mini meal/snack after practice before bed.

What matters most? That your athlete is having enough to fuel them through practice and is not getting hangry!
