Tree Planting at Africatown, a community established in the 1860s by 32 West ​​​​Africans who were captured, enslaved, and transported to the U.S. during the last known shipment of slaves to North America. This community service project is part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Enhance Our Environment initiative that promotes environmental sustainability to ​​combat climate change through tree planting campaigns.


​The sorority members planted trees on the Africatown campus to help beautify and sustain the historic property. The tree planting took place behind the Africatown Heritage House.

We’re spotlighting members of our organization who have historically and currently blazed trails, many of them the FIRST in their respective industries. These history-makers carry the true meaning of being pioneers with vision. Our Pearls of Black History are Sisters who truly represent refinement and wisdom.

Hazel R. O’Leary is a lawyer, politician and university administrator. From 1993 to 1997, Sister Hazel served as the 7th United States Secretary of Energy. In this position, she made history as the first woman and first Black woman to hold the position.

Prior to becoming the U.S. Secretary of Energy, Sister Hazel was appointed assistant administrator of the General Energy Administration, General Counsel of the Community Services Administration and administrator of the Economic Regulatory Administration at the newly created Department of Energy. This made her the first U.S. Secretary of Energy to have worked for an energy company.

Sister Hazel also worked as a prosecutor in New Jersey on organized crime cases. She later became an Assistant Attorney General and Assistant Prosecutor for the state.

In 2004, Sister Hazel was appointed and arrived as the 14th president of Fisk University in Nashville, TN. She served as President of this Historically Black College and her Alma Mater until 2013.

Sister Hazel currently serves on the boards of directors of the Nashville Alliance for Public Education, Nashville Business Community for the Arts, World Wildlife Fund, Arms Control Association and CAMAC Energy Inc.

We’re sharing our “Top 08 Ways to Reduce Waste,” to make a significant impact on our environment.

2) Here’s a reminder (because we know they can be easy to forget) to pack and use those reusable grocery bags.. And not just for your groceries. Reuse them for clothes shopping trips and more!

A tip to remember them is to leave them in the back seat, or write “BAGS” on top of your grocery list. Another small change that make a big eco-friendly impact!💗💚🌎

The Honorable Sharon Pratt, J.D., is an Attorney and Politician. Pratt is the FIRST Black Woman to serve as Mayor of Washington, D.C. (1991-1995), and the First Black Woman to serve as a mayor of a major American city.

Pratt is the recipient of many awards including the Presidential Award from the NAACP, and Glamour magazine’s “Woman of the Year Award.” She is the founder and manager of Pratt Consulting, LLC a company that brings strategic consulting support to government, commercial and non-profit clients.

Pratt is a Washington, D.C. native. She attended Howard University where she received her B.A. and later her Juris Doctorate from the Howard University School of Law.

Pratt was initiated in the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®️ in 1964.

Kamala Harris is the 49th and current Vice President of the United States. Vice President Harris is the FIRST Black female (and First Asian American) vice president and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history. Before becoming Vice President, Harris was the 27th San Francisco, District Attorney. She was also elected as the FIRST Black woman to serve as California’s 32nd Attorney General.

She was then elected a United States Senator becoming only the second Black woman in the chamber’s history.

Vice President Harris is an Oakland, California native. She graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she was initiated into the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®️
