there’s a tiny piece of your brain that decides — in about 3/10ths of a second — whether your content lives or dies.
The technical term is called the Reticular Activating System
But we just call it your brain’s Bouncer
The Bouncer decided who gets in the discotec we call your brain
He decides who gets your attention
And unless you know how to sweet talk the bouncer and get him to put you on your ideal clients VIP list, well, you ain’t gettin in da klerb
Our brain processes 11 million bits of information every single second.
Your conscious mind can only handle about 40 of them.
The rest just gets filtered out before you even knew they existed.
The bouncer’s job is to decide what makes the cut.
And… it ain’t much.
Only 4 things get through the door:
→ survival threats
→ novelty (what’s new, unexpected, different)
→ personal relevance (aka, “this is literally me”)
→ emotion (anything that makes you feel something)
that’s it. Everything else gets turned away at the door.
So when you feel like everything needs to be polished…
Polished = expected = deleted.
When you to speak to a broad audience?
broad = relevant to no one = invisible.
Our goal with content, of any style, is to first disrupt the pattern, break through, and knock loud enough that we get The Bouncer’s attention.
Because when we get his attention, we get in the club.
Inside Anti-Social, our new business accelerator, we have an entire section dedicated to The Bouncer, and wrote a Playbook on How to Win in the Attention Economy.
