Throwing out your mattress doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve thrown out the bed bugs.

Bed bugs don’t live only in mattresses. They can hide in bed frames, headboards, baseboards, furniture, cracks and other protected areas close to where people sleep.

That means replacing the mattress without addressing the infestation can leave you with a new mattress—and the same bed bug problem.

And putting an unwanted mattress at the curb with a “FREE” sign can potentially pass the problem along to someone else.

This is also where a trained bed bug detection dog can help. Rather than assuming the mattress is the problem, a properly trained K9 can use its sense of smell to help identify areas where bed bug odor is present—including places that may not be obvious during a visual inspection.

Rodents are often active long before you ever see one.

If you keep backyard chickens, now is a good time to take a walk around your coop and property. Early detection can prevent bigger problems later.

Look for these common signs of rodent activity:

• Small, dark droppings around feeders, coops, or feed storage.
• Gnaw marks on wood, plastic, feed bags, or electrical wiring.
• Burrows or holes under sheds, foundations, concrete slabs, or around the coop.
• Feed scattered on the ground or signs that feed is disappearing faster than normal.
• Shredded grass, straw, paper, or insulation used for nesting.
• Well-worn paths through tall grass or along fences.
• Noises in walls, under floors, or in the coop after dark.
• Unusual behavior from your chickens, especially at dusk or during the night.

Rodents don’t just eat feed. They contaminate it with urine and droppings, spread disease, damage buildings and wiring, and their populations can grow surprisingly fast if left unchecked.

A few minutes spent inspecting your property today can help protect your flock tomorrow.

Take a few extra minutes to inspect used furniture carefully. While most tag sale finds are perfectly fine, bed bugs can sometimes hitch a ride in furniture, upholstered items, and personal belongings.

A quick look now can save a lot of frustration later.

If you’ve noticed geese that won’t fly away this time of year, they’re probably not injured.

From mid-June through mid-July, Canada geese go through their annual molt, replacing their flight feathers. During this period, adult geese are temporarily unable to fly.

You may see them gathered near ponds, lakes, and shorelines, often appearing reluctant to move away from people or dogs.

They’re not injured.

They’re not abandoned.

They’re just molting.

If you encounter molting geese, please give them space and avoid chasing them. Keeping dogs leashed near shorelines can also help reduce unnecessary stress during this vulnerable time.

A few weeks from now, their new flight feathers will be fully grown, and they’ll be back in the air.
