The Martin's, Kenneth (54), Barbara (48), and their daughters Barbie (14), Virginia (13), and Susan (11) went missing on December 7, 1958. Their son was in the Navy at the time of their disappearance. The family's disappearance has been described as one of the "most baffling" mysteries in Oregon history.

Several months after their disappearance, Virginia and Susan's bodies were found on the shores of the Columbia River.

In 2025, a private diver was able to identify the location of their car using historic photos, leading to the discovery of the 1954 Ford Country Squire station wagon, located 50 feet underwater in the Columbia River.

Diver Archer Mayo discovered human remains and various artifacts, including a camera cover with Ken Martin's name on it. The remains were sent to Othram, Inc. for DNA analysis, confirming the identity of Kenneth Martin (the other remains were too degraded and could not be analyzed).
