OMG this is so exciting. These containers fit perfectly in the drawer!

They are a very odd size, 4 1/2 inches wide by 10 inches long, but they fit perfectly. Of course, that’s what we always hope for when doing functional design, but it is rare. Drawers are all different sizes. That's why I always measure the drawer first and customize the containers to the space, and even then there can be a little gap somewhere.

It’s such a great use of space when the containers fit to the edges. It makes you want to just keep opening the drawer to look at it! ✨

I customize every pantry based on the available space and to how my client shops and cooks. I worked for over 10 years as a space planner and draftsperson, so measuring and designing the layout always comes first. This is a great example of how important space planning is when it comes to organizing.

My client wanted this walk-in pantry set up with room for future storage. Every container was measured to fit the space and hold the food she has now, plus what she’ll bring home later. Leaving that extra room is what keeps a pantry easy to maintain after a big grocery run.

She has glass containers with bamboo lids and baskets on the floor. On the sides are white multi-purpose bins from The Container Store.

Garages tend to become the "catch-all" room in the house, which makes them one of the most overwhelming spaces to take on. (This is also why I love organizing them - the end result feels so rewarding.)

Thank you so much to Linda for this review, and for trusting me with a project that had been on her list for five years. That's such a common feeling... a space that sits on your to-do list until it starts to feel oppressive.

This is a good example of how tweaking an organizing system (even a small one) can make a difference in your day-to-day life. Now, you might be saying “Jill, that before picture isn’t half bad!” And I agree, it’s not the worst. But it really wasn’t working for my client. Everything was sliding around and the lids wouldn’t stay up. So it came out, and individual containers went in to divide the space instead. Lids finally have a home, and the glass containers stay put.

FUN FACT: The containers we had were an odd size, 4 1/2 inches wide by 10 inches long, but they fit the drawer perfectly! That almost never happens in functional design!! Usually there’s a sliver of wasted space or something just slightly off. This time it all lined up.

It’s the kind of result that makes you want to keep opening the drawer just to look at it. 😂

Did you know that merged with over the summer? This is kind of a big deal in the professional organizing world, since many organizers rely on TCS for a lot of supplies. It looks different in there these days!

I went in this week to grab Everything Organizer pantry bins for a client and ended up walking out with a super cute Fall throw pillow too. Whoops. That was not part of the plan! 😂 But just because I'm an Organizer doesn't mean I don't also love to find and collect cool decor. I think that's kind of a misconception about this profession.

My personal philosophy is to make each item that you own count. Instead of having two can openers, just one that is beautiful quality. Reduce first, then add a few pieces that express your personality. To maintain this, I use the "one in, one out" rule. Since I bought the pillow, something in the house has to go! This rule is great for everyone, and especially good for people who live in small spaces.

Setting up and organizing the laundry room cabinets in this client’s new home called for a few simple, functional systems.

We used a combination of multi-purpose bins and clear shoe bins from The Container Store that the client already owned, matching each one to the shelf it needed to fill. Not everything needs a bin either. A few items stayed in their original packaging in the upper cabinet, because that’s what worked best for this client.

It’s a good reminder that customizing an organizing system can sometimes look like working with what the client already has instead of buying everything new, (and being fine leaving some things exactly as they are). Organized enough is always the goal!✨

I remind my clients about this a lot. A space can look incredible in photos and still not actually work for the person living in it.

When I start a project, I ask how someone actually uses a space, not how they think they're supposed to use it. A pantry organized around three kids grabbing snacks looks different than one for a person who meal preps every Sunday. A closet built around someone who works from home in leggings looks different than one designed around client meetings five days a week.

This is the whole idea behind customizing every system I design. Once it fits how you actually live, it's so much easier to keep up with.

This small pantry is 23 inches deep, which is incredibly common, and also always a challenge. Deep shelves swallow items in the back. IYKYK!

My go-to solution for pantries like this is the STAK container from The Container Store! It comes in three different widths with removable dividers, so I can customize the setup based on what’s being stored in each spot. Each container also has small wheels on one end, so instead of digging around blindly, you just roll it forward.

We decanted the baking items and grains into these, with one category per container so nothing gets mixed together in the depth of the shelf.

Then... we added rechargeable, motion activated LED strip lights under each shelf! Now the pantry lights up automatically the second you open the door.

My client was thrilled, and we didn’t need to do any remodeling to make this space fully accessible. Just the right containers and a little light. ✨

These images are from the very first time I organized this client’s primary closet, right after they moved into their new home. We sorted through everything they owned, did some solid reducing, and repurposed their existing containers. 

I’m excited to share that phase two is coming soon! That will be a full redesign with new containers from The Container Store. I’ll be sharing those photos and videos soon. Stay tuned for the updated results! ✨

Bathroom drawer before and after! This one was pretty straightforward to organize. Clear containers do the heavy lifting, and they fit perfectly in this drawer, which doesn't always happen.

Giving everything a home and dividing by category means you can see everything at a glance without digging around. I can't tell you how much I love that! ✨
