We are proud to share that Attorney Mikaela Marino is the recipient of the 2026 Michael E. Haglund Young Lawyer Award, which honors young lawyers who demonstrate exceptional commitment to pro bono service. This recognition reflects Mikaela’s dedication to advocacy, community service, and making a meaningful impact through her work. “I believe that we have a collective responsibility to serve the communities in which we live and practice,” says Mikaela.

Mikaela was recognized at the Multnomah Bar Association Annual Dinner on May 20th and celebrated alongside her fellow Sussman Shank colleagues. Sussman Shank Managing Partner and Tax Group Chair, Heather A. Kmetz, was featured in an opinion published by the Portland Business Journal titled “Will Washington’s newly inked ‘millionaires tax’ law return residents to Oregon?” In it, Kmetz opines why the newly signed Washington “Millionaires Tax” (SB 6346), which imposes a 9.9% tax on earned income over $1 million, is unlikely to send wealthy Washingtonians to Oregon.
