Firewood season: keep the pests outside. 🪵

A woodpile is a great place to hide if you're a carpenter ant, a beetle, a spider or a mouse. A few habits keep them from riding in with the next armload:

• Stack it away from the house, not against the siding.
• Keep the pile off the ground on a rack.
• Bring in only what you'll burn that day.

Finding insects indoors once the wood stove is going? We'll figure out where they're coming from.

Pest facts: stink bugs 🍁

Seeing shield-shaped brown bugs on the sunny side of the house? October is when stink bugs go looking for a warm place to spend a Maine winter.

✅ They move indoors in fall to spend the winter.
✅ They don't bite, but they smell when crushed.
✅ They slip in through gaps around windows and siding.

The fix is keeping them out in the first place: sealing gaps around windows, trim and siding before the cold sets in. If they're already showing up inside, we can help.

Fall yard and perimeter protection starts at the edge of the lawn. 🍂

That strip where your grass meets the woods, the stone wall and the leaf litter is where our technicians look first in October. It's where pests shelter as the weather cools, and it's where adult deer ticks are most active right now across Greater Portland.

A fall perimeter inspection tells you what's living along that border and what to do about it before winter.

"Robbins has been extremely professional, responsive, and fair priced." — Greg C., Google review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

That's the whole job, really: show up when we say we will, explain what we found, and charge a fair price for the work. 46 Google reviews, 5.0 stars, and every one of them from a neighbor here in Greater Portland.

Thank you, Greg — and thank you to everyone who has taken a minute to leave a review. It's how a family-owned company competes with the national names.

Pest facts: deer ticks 🌿

Tick season doesn't end with summer in Maine. Adult deer ticks (black-legged ticks) have a second surge in the fall and stay active on any day above freezing — even after the first frost. They're about the size of a sesame seed, and they don't drop from trees; they wait on tall grass and leaf litter for something warm to walk by.

A few things that help: keep grass short, rake leaf litter away from paths and play areas, and check yourself, kids and pets after time outside. A perimeter yard treatment can knock the population down where you actually spend time.

Fall exclusion season is here. 🍁

You'll see our truck in a lot of driveways around Greater Portland this time of year. Once the nights dip into the 40s, mice and rats start looking for a warm place to spend the winter — and a gap the width of a pencil is all they need to get into a basement or attic.

Exclusion means finding those gaps and sealing them before the first frost, so you're not trapping mice all winter. We just published a homeowner's guide to fall rodent-proofing in Greater Portland: https://www.robbinspest.com/blog/fall-rodent-exclusion-greater-portland-maine

Mice are moving in. Seal it before the first frost. ❄️

Every fall in Greater Portland, mice head for the same places: gaps around basement bulkheads, where siding meets the foundation, utility line entries, and under garage doors. A mouse only needs a dime-sized opening. Once the first frost hits, they're already inside the walls.

Our fall rodent exclusion service finds those entry points and seals them with copper mesh and sealant — like our technician is doing here on a classic Maine fieldstone foundation — and pairs it with monitoring so you know the problem is handled.

Pest facts: wasps & hornets 🐝

Late September is peak season for yellowjackets and hornets in Maine. Three things worth knowing:

FACT: Yellowjacket nests peak in September, with thousands of workers in a mature colony.
FACT: A wasp can sting more than once — unlike a honey bee, it does not lose its stinger.
FACT: In fall, wasps switch from hunting insects to chasing sugar, which is why they crowd soda cans, fallen apples and trash bins.

If a nest has shown up under an eave, in a wall void or in the ground near your Portland-area home, don't reach for the hardware-store spray — call (207) 770-0274 or visit robbinspest.com and we'll take care of it safely.

Fall rodent prep starts at the back door. 🐭

Mice and rats look for warm buildings the moment September nights turn cool, and a restaurant or office back entrance in the Old Port is exactly what they're after: a gap under a steel door, a dumpster corral, a crack in old brick. Here our technician is setting a tamper-resistant bait station and checking the door sweep at a Portland business — the kind of small fixes that keep a fall problem from becoming a winter one.

We put together a fall prep guide for restaurants, property managers and offices in Greater Portland: https://www.robbinspest.com/blog/commercial-pest-control-portland-maine
