How do grant applications get selected by funders and is it fair?
Funders receive hundreds of applications for each grant opportunity so they need to develop processes to review applications carefully and efficiently in order to select grant awardees. As a matter of fact, a good scenario gives you about a 30% chance of having your application selected, so it can already feel like the cards are stacked against you. I’ve even heard concerns from organizations that are not awarded funding that they feel it's not a fair process and question how these decisions get made. Similar to applying for a job, we can wonder if they already have someone in mind? Were they going on gut-feel? Were they being biased?
