At ๐
๐จ๐ซ๐๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ, weโve seen firsthand how different contexts shape the path toward responsible fisheries โ from Oregonโs Dungeness crab to ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ซ ๐๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง. Running two credible ๐

๐๐๐ฌ) in parallel offers a unique lens into what sustains progress โ and what can stall it. Both fisheries are deeply embedded in their coastal communities, grounded in generations of fishing tradition and local stewardship.
The ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐
๐๐, launched in ๐๐๐๐, began as a market-driven initiative initially encouraged by a major retailer and is now advancing toward MSC certification through coordinated efforts among fishers, managers, and market supply chain actors.
New buyers and retailers have since joined, reinforcing industry commitment โ even as the fishery continues to navigate stock assessment challenges and the ongoing need for broad stakeholder engagement.
Meanwhile, the ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ซ ๐๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง ๐
๐๐, initiated in ๐๐๐๐, continues to rebuild a fishery under complex regional and geopolitical conditions. With a legacy of hatchery influence and depleted wild chum stocks, the project focuses on strengthening scientific capacity, governance, and management systems to support long-term recovery and maintain international credibility.
Across these two distant regions, several shared realities emerge:
โ๏ธ Commercial incentives remain uneven, especially where immediate market benefits are limited.
๐ Market demand fluctuates and buyer interest shifts, testing commitment to long-term sustainability goals.
๐ค Stakeholder engagement is complex, requiring time, trust, and continuity.
๐ Geopolitical and trade constraints add further uncertainty โ particularly for Russian fisheries.
Scientifically sound management depends on continuous government support, strong fishery collaboration, and adaptability to emerging challenges โ including social dimensions that are often harder to address but equally essential to long-term sustainability. Evolving global trade mechanisms can also have drastic impacts, underscoring the need for resilient and adaptive fisheries.
Still, progress continues. By using the ๐๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฆ๐๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค as a practical tool for improving management โ not just as a certification goal โ and by fostering cooperation among ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฌ, ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ, ๐ฌ๐๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐ฌ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฒ๐๐ซ๐ฌ, both FIPs show how sustained collaboration and investment in coastal fishing communities can drive meaningful change, even under unpredictable conditions.
Our long-term aim is to strengthen the link between ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐๐, ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ค๐๐ญ ๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ โ proving that credible, responsible fisheries can thrive in any context.
