I cleaned this up a little more. Didn't add any details, just cleaned the transition between the legs and body. Basically avoiding work on the skeleton arms. I'll get back to those soon enough.

Again, this is a template from Pierre-Luc. Check out his other bandsaw templates at I started on his bear template, but there was soft sap wood in the block. I'm looking forward to doing that one again after I finish my skeleton salad servers.

Beautiful wood makes beautiful spoons! However, I don't see anyone eating oatmeal with this spoon. I started carving this as my carving demo at Gathering of the Guilds at the end of April.

The pattern for this one is from the book Carving Spoons by Shirley Adler. The wood is black walnut with sap wood from

We're super excited to have a carving! Fun to have a heron in the yard. The bird needs a name... Crosby and I are leaning towards Henry, after Henrietta, the Columbia Slough Watershed Council mascot.

You may have seen posts about making

We talked about his reasoning behind this challenge - playing with form and function, seeing if you can create a useful tool in a short amount of time, letting go of "perfection" and just creating to create. He easily convinced me I needed to give it a try.

Well the first picture is not my 10 minute fork - this is the "finished" product. I was enjoying the relaxing evening carving on the patio, and continued chipping away. Yes, that's out of scope per the challenge. Maybe next time I'll keep it to 10 minutes. Maybe.

The second picture is where I started. The bandsaw only took a minute of time but did 99% of the work. The third picture is after spending the rest of the 10 minutes with a knife, so the 3rd picture is my true

Crosby test drove the fork during dinner and he gave it a thumbs up. I'll take it!

I'm looking forward to more forks!

I made a few spoons! These will all be available this weekend at

Lots of amazing stuff to see at this show! If you're coming down tomorrow evening, say hi to me in the Oregon Carvers Guild demo booth. I'll be there from 4:30pm to close carving - you guessed it, a spoon! Something different than these though.

All the wood - black walnut and curly big leaf maple - is from I messed up labeling the spoons for sale and said they are quilted rather than curly. How many will be triggered and how many will not notice?

I received this awesome magnet this week. Proud to be a part of this movement. The magnet is right at home on my bandsaw and pairs nicely with the pyrography "patch" I did a couple years back on my tool box.

Thanks to and magnet, stickers and putting it all together.

We had a great time last night at the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers Carving SIG. The focus for March, April and May is carving utensils. We provided over 30 spoon blanks for people to carve.

I brought all my spoons with me to provide some sort of inspiration and direction. Some of these are in our kitchen arsenal, a couple are the very first two spoons I carved, and most are waiting for me to finish them.

I use Rise Up and Carve templates for a few spoons. Thank you to the talented carvers there that provide free templates!

All the birch, black walnut, and curly big leaf maple is from - basically most of these spoons!

A couple of the new spoons were dry enough to finish.

A black walnut with sap wood mixing spoon and a spalted curly big leaf maple mixing spoon. Both pieces of wood are really beautiful and made a couple really nice spoons!

March, April, and May the Carving Special Interest Group for the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers will be focused on carving utensils.

I received a ton of birch from that I'll have cut down to various sized blanks for various spoons, spatulas and spreaders.

I made a few samples so people could see what to expect. It's not the most striking visually, but it's green and easy to carve.

I went a little too thin on the cooking spoon...
