Hiring another clinician can feel like the obvious next move when your practice is growing.

But then comes the part nobody gets excited about:
Can your practice actually afford the hire?

Because there is usually a gap between the day someone joins your team and the day their caseload is full enough to cover what it costs to have them there.
And if you did not plan for that ramp-up period, a few months can go by and suddenly you are staring at your numbers wondering where all the money went. 😬

That is why I brought CFO Carla Titus onto The Traveling Therapist Podcast.

We talked about what you need to know before you hire, including:

→ How to financially prepare for the ramp-up period.
→ What cash runway means when you are adding someone to your team.
→ How to keep an eye on a remote clinician's performance without constantly checking numbers.
→ What to do when someone is not hitting the numbers you expected.
→ How to recognize when it might be time to let an underperforming team member or vendor go.

If another hire is anywhere on your radar, this is an episode you will want to hear first.

Comment CFO and I’ll send the episode straight to your DMs.

Tracking metrics without acting on them is just noise.

Pull your report and look at the numbers. Now ask yourself: What do these numbers mean? What are we going to do about it?

If something's working, double down. If something's broken, fix it. If something's good, make sure it happens again.

Track consistently. Act intentionally. That's how metrics drive growth.

The dread is often bigger than the actual situation.

Your accountant will make you look at your financials come tax time anyway. Why wait until March when you're pressed against a deadline?

Open your books now. See where you actually are. Make small course corrections throughout the year instead of scrambling at the last minute.

What's one financial decision you're putting off because you haven't looked at your numbers yet?

Quick question: If your business makes $10k profit, can you take it all home?

Technically, yes. Practically, no.

Here's why: You need that profit to place your next order, cover materials, pay labor. Without it, you have no working capital. That means you can't grow.

The move: Take a salary + distributions at year-end when cash is confirmed. Leave the profit in the business where it belongs.

Your accountant and your CFO aren't the same role. They have different skill sets.

An accountant focuses on the numbers, the past, and what happened. A CFO starts with your business strategy and then builds the numbers around it.

If you're paying for CFO-level support but getting accounting support, you're missing the strategic piece that moves your business forward!

You're tracking your numbers. You review them monthly. You see them clearly.

So why isn't anything changing?

Welcome to reporting theater. You have the data, it feels like progress, but without decisions tied to those numbers, you're just reviewing history.

Numbers become powerful when they drive action and create a different outcome going forward.

Episode 29 of the CEO Financial Clarity Corner explores how to move from tracking data to using it.

Not every CFO hire works out, and that's okay. What's not okay is staying stuck with the wrong one.

A great fractional CFO doesn't just show up with a good sales pitch. They show up with quick wins, clear financial guidance, and a growth strategy that actually moves your business forward. If you have more questions than answers after bringing on a CFO, that's your sign something needs to change.

You don't have to commit before you're confident it's the right fit. The right CFO will prove their value early and keep proving it!

Episode 28 of the CEO Financial Clarity Corner podcast breaks down exactly how to find the right CFO and what to do if your current financial advisor isn't delivering. 🎙️
