Nobody talks about how many businesses are one resignation letter away from total chaos.

Your IT guy leaves and suddenly nobody knows the router password. Nobody knows where the backup software logs in. Nobody knows who owns the domain. You're calling your old employee begging them to help you out, or you're paying someone like me emergency rates to break into your own systems.

I've seen this at 5-person shops and 80-person companies. The size doesn't matter. What matters is whether the knowledge lives in someone's head or somewhere the business actually owns.

Write down your credentials. Use a password manager the company controls, not a personal one tied to somebody's Gmail. Document who owns what before somebody walks out the door.

Two hours now versus a week of chaos later. That math is easy.

Had a client forward me something last week. Looked exactly like a vendor invoice. Right logo, right format, slightly different reply-to address. They caught it. Barely. The email had already been open for two days before anyone got suspicious. That's not a tech problem. That's a habits problem. One policy change and a ten-minute training session would close most of that gap.

CMMC is not optional for defense contractors in Hampton Roads anymore. The question is which level applies to you.

Short version: Level 1 is 15 basic controls and a self-assessment. Level 2 is 110 controls, a documented System Security Plan, and usually a third-party audit.

The dividing line is whether you handle Controlled Unclassified Information - CUI. Technical drawings. Specs. Engineering data. If that flows through your systems, you are looking at Level 2.

This carousel breaks both levels down in plain English. No compliance jargon. Just what each one actually requires and where to start.

If you are working government contracts around Norfolk, Newport News, or anywhere in Hampton Roads and are not sure what applies to you, the full breakdown is in the first comment.

We hear this question from local business owners all the time. The honest answer: a 15-person office should budget $1,500–$3,750/month for solid coverage. Per-user pricing, one flat monthly fee, one provider accountable for outcomes.

But the real comparison is not MSP vs. nothing. It is MSP vs. what a two-day outage costs your team.

Wrote a full breakdown of MSP pricing models, what the ranges look like, and the questions to ask before you sign. No jargon.

Managed IT services cost depends on users, scope, support hours, and risk. Here are realistic MSP pricing ranges for Hampton Roads firms.

Quick question for business owners in Hampton Roads:

What is the one IT problem you wish would just go away?

Could be your internet going out every other week. Could be passwords scattered across a dozen sticky notes. Could be that printer that nobody has been able to fix for six months.

Drop it in the comments. We read every one and will answer the ones we can right here.

Spent part of this morning cleaning up access for someone who left a Portsmouth business eight months ago. Still had active email, still had shared drive access, still had the admin login for their scheduling software. Nobody flagged it. Just sat there. Offboarding isn't exciting work. It's also the most preventable exposure most small offices have.

Portsmouth, Virginia is home base for Helix Stax. Not a satellite office. Not a virtual address. This is where we live and work.

That matters because when a business in Norfolk has a security incident on a Tuesday afternoon, we are not routing a ticket to a call center in another time zone. We are 20 minutes away.

Hampton Roads has a specific mix of small businesses, defense contractors, medical practices, and government-adjacent companies. The IT and cybersecurity needs here are not the same as a startup in Northern Virginia. We understand the DoD contractor pipeline. We know what CMMC means for a 12-person shop in Chesapeake that just got their first prime contract.

If you run a business in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, or Newport News - we are your local option.

I wish I had a dollar for every time a small business owner told me "nobody's going to bother with us."

A dentist with 900 patient records. A contractor with 40 subcontractor W-9s and a folder of bank routing numbers. A salon with three years of customer emails and credit card authorizations. You are not invisible to the people who do this for a living. You are actually the target. Small businesses get hit because you almost never have a dedicated security person, you almost never notice quickly, and you almost never have the resources to fight back.

The criminals doing this are not sitting in a dark room picking targets by hand. They run automated scans across millions of IP addresses looking for open doors. Your size is not a shield. It is barely even a consideration.

I am not saying this to scare you. I am saying it because "we're too small" is the exact assumption they are counting on you to have.
