On Saturday, the Proof Foundation had its annual holiday party, celebrating with the residents of Mt. Herman Retirement Village in Portsmouth. It was a wonderful afternoon of intergenerational fellowship.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize the incredible efforts of caregivers who selflessly support their loved ones. It’s also a moment to reflect on the importance of caregivers taking care of themselves.

This year, Silver Care Dementia Center Inc.’s second Caregiver Wellness Cohort in Portsmouth wrapped up, and its impact has been significant. I had the privilege of participating in the first cohort this past spring with my mother. Both of us were caregivers for my late grandmother, navigating the joys and challenges of providing her with the care she deserved.

After my grandmother’s passing in May, my mom continued with the program, which became a turning point for her. Like many caregivers, she had spent years prioritizing her mother’s needs while unintentionally neglecting her own. The Caregiver Wellness Cohort not only offered resources and tools to enhance her well-being, but also provided a supportive community of people who truly understood her journey.

The program’s mission was to create a space for caregivers to nurture themselves, fostering resilience, balance, and fulfillment. For my mother and countless others, it accomplished just that. Thank you Silver Care Dementia Center Inc. for your vision.

Election day is nearing! But voting can be challenging to older adults between paperwork, transportation, and long lines. Still, their voices matter.

It’s important you create a plan for you and your elderly loved ones to cast your ballots. Help them participate in early voting or submit a mail-in or absentee ballot. Not only is voting our civic duty, but it’s an important event that can bring a sense of accomplishment for you and your elderly loved ones.

Tonight, I enjoyed a small farewell dinner with my wonderful intern of two years, Christopher Baker. He came to Proof Please, LLC from Hampton Roads Workforce Council and when his internship ended, he asked me to create an opportunity for him to stay!

We’ve been especially blessed to have someone so dedicated and considerate on our team. Now he’s off to his junior year of college and I am off to my first year of law school, but we will continue to work together in the future with the Proof Foundation. Wish us well!
