TIPS for building a collection (because you want beautiful things to look at in your home):

Some people naturally collect art, and some don’t. The thing is, whether you are inclined to or not, you still want beautiful things to look at in your home. Right?!

Step one: What materials draw you? Are you partial to textiles, ceramics, metal, wood, or rubber duckies? Determining a material is a great first step. Or think about theme, shape or colors that make you swoon, and use that as your starting point.

Once you’ve determined your theme (which is the organizing factor for your collection), work on creating variety across that theme: If you love pottery, find a range of sizes and shapes. If it's ducks, definitely go for different outfits. Diversity creates interest.

Last but not least, play with the arrangement: Clustering them in groups is pleasing to the eye. Lining them up on a shelf can work, too. Reposition them until your eye finds a pleasing balance.

I’m obsessed with vessels, and at some point decided I needed them not just out of clay, but in every craft material I could find. It has opened up some fun collecting when I travel or go to antique stores. I have vases made out of fiber, wood, and metal. Stone is next.

The point is to have fun, and bring something into your house that makes you happy. You can do this on any budget. You can walk on the beach or in the woods collecting shells and rocks, no shopping is required.

What do I love most about my job?
Getting to know people. Listening to what makes home special to them—and where they feel stuck—then helping bring all those pieces together into a space that’s both beautiful and functional.

When I get to help someone make their house truly theirs (not just an amalgamation of trends, but a reflection of who they are and what they love), that is my ultimate joy.

My work is about conversation and collaboration. It’s about processing ideas together, explaining the impact of design choices, and finding the balance between old and new so a space feels cohesive but never fussy.

Most of all, it’s about you having a voice in the work we create together.
