tHRive and VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads are teaming up to help young professionals build the knowledge, confidence, and connections to make an impact through nonprofit board service.

We'll start at Bloom Coworking for Board 101 presented by Tage Counts, President & CEO of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads, who will break down the fundamentals of board service and what it takes to serve effectively.

Then, hear from Hope Sinclair, CEO of Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads, and Lauren Bland, Executive Director of the North American Sand Soccer Championship, as they share their experiences, lessons learned, and perspectives on nonprofit leadership.

Afterward, we’ll head right next door to Post Secondary Brewing for Networking with the Nonprofits. This is your chance to meet local nonprofit leaders and explore ways to get involved!

Bloom Market in downtown Portsmouth is launching a retail incubator, splitting into four subsidized spaces to help small business owners grow and eventually move into permanent storefronts in the Olde Towne district.

We toured available properties—including several that will soon come online—exploring spaces that could become the future home of businesses currently growing through the Retail Alliance Retail Catalyst program.

If you’ve noticed that we’ve really stepped up our social media game lately… 👀📱 there’s a reason for that!

Full credit goes to our interns! 🙌 They’ve been bringing fresh ideas, creativity, and energy to our social channels this summer, and we’re excited to start introducing you to the talented young people behind the scenes.

Meet De’Vionne Harris! 👋

De’Vionne is a rising sophomore at I.C. Norcom High School (Portsmouth Public Schools), where he maintains a 4.0 GPA. A dedicated student leader, he serves as President of the Portsmouth NAACP Youth Council, Membership Director for VAHSD, and member of CUTS Youth Employment Program, championing youth engagement and civic participation throughout his community.

A former Virginia State Senate Page, De’Vionne has a passion for public service and hopes to become a criminal justice attorney. He is committed to creating more opportunities for young people through leadership, education, and community engagement—and he’s already making an impact well beyond the classroom.

We may be nearing the end of summer, but there’s still time to introduce you to the incredible young people who have spent their summer learning, growing, and building with us at Bloom Coworking! 🌱

Meet Jakobe Taylor, a student at Churchland High School (Portsmouth Public Schools) and member of the Class of 2028. A dedicated student-athlete, Jakobe competes in cross country and track & field and hopes to continue running at the collegiate level.

Jakobe has big goals for the future. He plans to attend college to study Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, and after graduation, he hopes to move to a major city and launch his own business.

This summer, Jakobe has been putting that entrepreneurial spirit into action as he works toward building his first app. 🚀 He’s curious, driven, and always looking for opportunities to learn something new—which is exactly the kind of energy we love seeing at Bloom!
