Have you ever wondered how wealth is actually created and why it ends up concentrated where it does? A report from Place Matters and the Maine Philanthropy Center takes a closer look at how wealth has been built, concentrated, and distributed in Maine and how those patterns continue to shape who benefits from economic growth today. The report offers a clear framework for understanding those systems and thinking more intentionally about how resources flow in Maine’s future, particularly when it comes to philanthropy. We may not all be optimists, but in this month’s newsletter we’re taking a cue from our client, NH School Funding Fairness Project, whose commitment to “uplifting joy” shines through even amid deeply challenging work. In that same spirit, we’re celebrating an incredible grant award for longtime client Beyond Soccer, and inviting you to guess the one thing that never fails to make each of us smile.

Guess what?! Nonprofits don't run on magical beans! They need resources to be effective - and skilled people are one of those resources. If you're a NH-based nonprofit, the NH Center for Nonprofits' wages and benefits survey provides one of the most comprehensive looks at nonprofit wages and benefits in the state. It gives organizations the data they need to make informed decisions about hiring, retention, budgeting, and equitable pay. You've got until Friday to fill it out!

✈️ Where do you most want to travel?
If geopolitics weren’t a thing, I’d visit the Middle East. I've had a tab open for nearly a year for an Islamic art tour in Iran but that's gonna have to wait...

🧘 What's your favorite way to spend the weekend?
If I can get family time, friend time, and a workout at Blaze in, I’ve nailed it. Bonus points if I make something - cocktails count.

🙂 What's something that always makes you smile?
Seeing my kids!

💪 What's something you're passionate about?
The team did personality tests (Myers-Briggs adjacent) a few years ago and I got diagnosed as being "strong willed" and called to stand up to injustices…so I guess that means right now I’m pretty passionate about what’s happening in our world (for better or worse).

☀️ What's a bright spot for you right now?
Across Brightspot's work, I've noticed more overlap and connective tissue between projects lately. It's exciting to feel like we're supporting meaningful work that is building on itself, rather than working in silos.

💡 What is something about the nonprofit sector you wish more people knew?
Nonprofits don’t run on “passion” and a drive to “do good.” Like any other business, they need skilled leadership, robust infrastructure, human capacity, and resources to be effective. Supporting these kinds of operational costs is what makes the programs you see in the community possible.

☕️ What's your favorite way to spend the weekend?
Coffee!!! Then a slow morning walk on the beach with the dog, a couple board games, an early dinner at one of our favorite spots in Portsmouth or Kittery, then winding down with a good book or TV show.

🌸 What's a bright spot for you right now?
Just started a bunch of flower seeds for my summer garden (fingers crossed they actually become flowers). :)

✈️ Where do you most want to travel?
Oh gosh…New Zealand tops the list but I also really want to go to South Africa, the Azores, and strangely enough Tucson!

🌳 What's something that always makes you smile?
A walk in the woods

Looking to get involved at the local level and DO SOMETHING to make a difference right now? Why not run for office (okay, you’ll probably come up with a bunch of reasons but seriously think on it for a minute).

Caitlin did it!!! In the recent town election she won a seat on the Rye Library Board. “If you’re even a little politically-curious, take the first step and learn about what it takes to run. I attended a NH Women’s Foundation’s “Women Run” program over the summer before I even knew I’d run. I was able to connect with women already in office and hear how they did it! I also had a call with 603 Forward when I decided to run and was able to ask the silly questions, get resources and guidance, and to hear from a real person who believed I could take this on.” Both of these programs are free!

Go for it (or at least explore going for it).

💡 What is something about the nonprofit sector you wish more people knew?
Clear communication and people-first relationships are at the heart of everything we do, even the less obvious parts!

📚 What's your favorite way to spend the weekend?
My ideal weekend includes a hike outside, a book haul from the library, and a nice dinner (including a dessert). Bonus would be seeing a cool bird or playing a board game with my spouse.

✈️ Where do you most want to travel?
I have a massive list of places I’d love to go. Japan and Iceland are definitely at the top. I’d also like to visit some more National Parks.

📒 What's something that always makes you smile?
Starting a fresh journal or notebook, blank pages feel like so much potential to me!

We've come down with a case of Space Fever! In this month's newsletter we're finding light moments in outer space and earlier sunrises while also exploring ways to dig in to the work the world needs right now. Check out our April edition for a whole list of ways to engage in the sector, a fresh blog post from Katherine, new client welcomes, and a spotlight on First Push Syndicate, a nonprofit bringing the transformative power of skateboarding into schools (trust us, it is really cool!).
