This is some good marketing right here. Sometimes the best copywriting is just typing and printing out what you want to say out loud!

Always recommend that in a PR crisis, you own up to it and try to “make it right.” Topps here does a decently good job while not throwing anybody under the proverbial bus.

Still, this is an unacceptable failure in quality control. I’ll post the original complaint below.

We doubt these bans on sales of Russian spirits will have any material effect.

“In the United States, less than 1% of vodka consumed is produced in Russia. More than half of all vodka consumed domestically is actually made in the U.S., according to data from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, a global firm that tracks alcohol sales.”

The bans are symbolic at best, and yet, the Stoli rebrand makes perfect sense. You don’t want your product to get caught on the wrong side of a war (obviously!) and everybody calls it Stoli anyway. It’s more surprising that they waited this long to do it.

Now will they jettison the Hotel Moskva imagery from the label, too? We think they have to. If they’re going to be clear on being NOT RUSSIAN (and it is definitely not clear) then they have to lose the visual association with the iconic Moscow hotel. Perhaps swap it for a special hotel in Kyiv? It would almost certainly tweak Putin’s nose!

Stoli Group's founder, Russian-born billionaire Yuri Shefler, was exiled from that nation in 2000 because of his opposition to Putin.

There's a lesson here, and the lesson is: When it comes to logos, or county seals, or any sort of branding, DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF! Hire a professional, or you might end up with something like this. 😳
