Here are some strategic questions that we'll explore in community conversation I'm facilitating at the NHBSR conference --
What capacities and possibilities got revealed in what we just lived through?
What issues feel most pressing now?
How can we, as the NHBSR community, build on the possibilities and focus our power and work on what’s most imperative now?

Our spring conferences are designed to appeal to businesses across the spectrum of sustainable/socially responsible business operations, allowing the 300+ attendees from large and small companies alike to find the perfect opportunity to learn and share best practices.

Now that we can contemplate in person meetings again (maybe), I share this blog about making large events participatory and engaging.

This blog was originally published in October, 2019, when we couldn't foresee that most large events would cease. As we anticipate meeting again in person, I hope the approaches here give you ideas. You might like to check out my new meeting design coaching services. It’s possible to make large ev...

Great interview with Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer working with the Equal Justice Initiative, providing legal representation to "people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons." Here's a quote about one of the callings for his work:

"..the other calling, for me, is that we have to begin this process of truth-telling, that we have to recognize that we can’t get well if we don’t identify, if we don’t diagnose the disease. We have this instinct for quick-fix and quick-cure. And if you don’t know what’s wrong with you, you’re not going to know whether the cure that you’ve been prescribed is sufficient. And I think this process of diagnosing the many ways that we are not healthy is not something we should fear but something we should embrace, because once we’ve done that, I think we have the capacity, the genius, the strength, the ingenuity, the wherewithal, to begin to address these maladies, this illness, and emerge as a healthier society, a healthier nation, a healthier place in the world, for everyone. And that’s what animates the work we’re trying to do now."

Drawing out the spirit and moral imagination of the lawyer and social visionary. “We all need a measure of unmerited grace.”

"Starting to justify your new approach by showing how it is different from past practice is one thing, demonising the past is, with the odd exception, a really bad idea....Think more of a spectrum with some phase shift boundaries and we might all benefit from the results." Insightful essay by Dave Snowden.

One of the things that most irritates me on social media is the complete ignorance people seem to have of the Straw-man fallacy in logic. For those not familiar with this perversion of reason it involves describing your opponent’s position in such a way as to demolish, not his or her actual positi...

What will it take to translate all of this intention and commitment to racial justice into meaningful change? Some people are new to this; some have been at it a long time. From my journey so far, I humbly offer some resources and areas I see as critical to doing this work.

The streets and airwaves are full of frustration and grief at the entrenched patterns of injustice and oppression that harm Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. I want to add my voice to the many who are galvanized to be part of the generation that changes the patterns. This is a moment to take i...
