🪲 Box Elder Bugs & Stink Bugs in North Idaho 🌲

If you’ve noticed groups of dark bugs gathering on the sunny side of your home, around windows, or trying to get indoors, you may be seeing box elder bugs or stink bugs.

While these pests can be a nuisance when they enter homes, they are generally not harmful to people, pets, or the structure of your home.

🪲 Box Elder Bugs
• Commonly found near box elder, maple, and ash trees
• Often gather in large numbers on warm, sunny surfaces
• May enter homes in the fall seeking a protected place to overwinter

🪲 Stink Bugs
• Recognized by their shield-shaped bodies
• Often found on plants and gardens during warmer months
• Can release an unpleasant odor when disturbed or crushed
• May also move indoors when temperatures drop

The best prevention is sealing cracks around windows, doors, siding, and other possible entry points before they begin looking for shelter.

🌲 Knowing what you’re seeing is the first step to understanding these seasonal visitors in North Idaho.

🍂 Pumpkin Spice & Avoid the Mice! 🎃🐭

Fall in North Idaho brings beautiful leaves, cooler temperatures, and cozy nights — but it can also invite unwanted guests looking for a warm place to spend the winter.

Here are a few simple fall tips to help keep rodents and insects outside where they belong:

🏠 Seal up entry points
Check and seal gaps around windows, doors, vents, and your home’s foundation. Don’t forget to screen and secure chimneys and other openings.

💧 Reduce moisture sources
Repair leaks, caulk around fixtures, and address damp areas that can attract pests.

🌳 Trim trees and shrubs
Give your landscaping a final trim before winter to help prevent branches from touching your home and creating pathways for pests.

🚪 Check weather stripping
Replace worn weather stripping around doors and windows to help block pest entry.

🍽️ Keep food sealed and surfaces clean
Wipe down counters, clean up crumbs, and store food properly to discourage rodents.

🍂 Clean up outdoor areas
Remove rotting vegetation, fallen fruit, and yard debris that can provide shelter or food for pests.

Enjoy the season — and take a few simple steps now to help keep your home comfortable all winter long. 🌲

🐜 Common Types of Ants Found in North Idaho 🌲

Not all ants are the same! Different species have different habits, nesting preferences, and behaviors. Here are a few common ants you may come across in North Idaho:

🐜 Carpenter Ants
One of the larger ants found in our area. They often nest in damp or damaged wood and are commonly noticed during spring swarm season.

🐜 Pavement Ants
Small ants that commonly nest in cracks along sidewalks, driveways, patios, and foundations. They may enter homes while searching for food.

🐜 Odorous House Ants
Tiny ants that can form large trails indoors. They get their name from the distinct odor they release when crushed.

🐜 Field Ants
Outdoor ants that build nests in soil, lawns, and landscaped areas. They are often seen foraging in yards.

🐜 Thatching Ants
Large ants that create noticeable mounds using plant material, soil, and debris. They are often found in natural areas and wooded environments.

Knowing which type of ant you’re seeing is the first step in understanding their behavior and why they may be showing up around your property.

🌲 Keep an eye out this spring — ant activity increases as temperatures warm up in North Idaho.

🍀 Is Clover Really a W**d?

Clover isn't always the bad guy—but if you're aiming for a thick, healthy lawn, it can become a problem.

Here's why:

🌱 It competes with your grass for space, making it harder for your lawn to grow thick and uniform.

☀️ It spreads quickly through seeds and creeping stems, allowing small patches to become large ones.

💧 It's often a sign of poor soil. Clover thrives in lawns that are low in nitrogen, which may mean your grass isn't getting the nutrients it needs.

🏡 It changes the look of your lawn. While some people like clover, others prefer a lush, w**d-free yard with consistent green turf.

🐝 The flowers attract bees. That's great for pollinators, but it can be a concern if children or pets play barefoot in the yard.

The good news? A healthy, properly fertilized lawn is the best defense against clover. Thick grass naturally crowds out w**ds before they can take over.

🍃 Seeing more clover than grass? Oasis Lawn & Pest can help get your lawn back on track!
