Furnace or wood stove running again on these cold mornings?

With frost in the forecast for Thursday morning around Spokane, a lot of us are firing up the furnace, wood stove, or fireplace again. That makes this a good week to press the test button on every smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm in the house. You should hear a loud beep. If an alarm stays quiet, put in a fresh battery or replace the alarm, then test it again. Fire safety experts suggest testing both kinds once a month.

Do you know where your main water shutoff is?

In a lot of houses it's down in a crawlspace, the basement, or behind something in the garage. Go find it this week. Then turn the handle and make sure it actually moves. Old valves can stick, and one that won't turn is no help at 2 in the morning.
