October is our single busiest month for rodent calls, and the homes that catch the problem in the first week save weeks of effort compared with the ones that wait. 🎯

Signs to watch for this week:

▪️ Rice-sized dark droppings under the kitchen sink or along pantry shelves
▪️ Chewed corners on cereal boxes or pet food bags
▪️ Scurrying or scratching noises overhead at night
▪️ Dark grease smudges along baseboards or garage shelves

A single pair of house mice can produce five to ten litters a year — which is why waiting until 'next week' almost always turns a quick trapping job into a multi-month recovery. 🔦

🍂 Cooler mornings mean cockroaches are heading indoors.

Cockroach populations spend late summer building up outside — in mulch, woodpiles, and crawl spaces — and once night temperatures start dropping into the 40s, they push toward whatever warm structure will take them. September and October are our two busiest months for cockroach calls, and the homes that catch it early save weeks of frustration compared with the ones that wait. 🎯

Signs to watch for this week:

▪️ Small black or dark-brown specks (like ground pepper) in cabinet corners, along countertops, or under the sink
▪️ Purse-shaped, rice-sized egg cases stuck to the underside of a shelf
▪️ A fast-moving insect that scatters when the kitchen light clicks on at 1 a.m.
▪️ A persistent musty, oily smell in a cabinet or laundry room

Cockroach populations grow exponentially, not linearly — a single fertilized female can produce up to 400 offspring in a year. That is why waiting until 'next week' almost always turns a targeted treatment into a whole-house recovery job.

🐝 The yellowjackets buzzing your barbecue right now are angrier for a reason.

Every fall, homeowners in the north end of the region tell us the same thing: "There were a few of these all summer — now there are hundreds." That is exactly what a yellowjacket colony looks like at the top of its curve. Colonies that started as one queen in April are now 1,500–5,000 workers strong, and late-summer food scarcity has flipped them into pure scavenger mode. 🥤

A few things worth knowing this week:

▪️ Ground nests are the biggest sting risk — no visual warning, triggered by mower vibration
▪️ Retail sprays usually push the colony deeper into the burrow (or into the wall)
▪️ An untreated fall colony still produces hundreds of new queens before it dies
▪️ First hard frost ends the workers, but by then the reproductive damage is done

September through October is the season for stinging incidents, and yellowjacket venom can trigger reactions even in people with no prior sting history.
