Spirit Lake, ID neighbors — that quiet hole in the lawn near your woodpile might already be a yellowjacket colony. June is when queens hand off nest-building to the first wave of workers, and once that handoff happens, the colony grows fast.
Most ground nests around Spirit Lake hide in abandoned rodent burrows, under landscape rock, behind deck skirting, or at the edge of the lawn where it meets the pines. You will not see the nest itself — just steady traffic in and out of one small hole. By the time it becomes obvious in August, there are hundreds of defenders inside.
