You’ve probably seen your boat’s capacity plate. But do you know what all those numbers actually mean? 👀

Your capacity plate gives you important limits for safely loading and powering your boat, including the maximum number of people, maximum weight, and, when applicable, maximum horsepower.

Here’s the part that’s easy to overlook: max persons and max weight aren’t the same thing. Passengers, fuel, coolers, fishing gear and everything else you bring aboard add weight. Just because there’s an open seat doesn’t necessarily mean you have capacity left.

And that horsepower number? It’s the maximum horsepower the boat is rated to handle, not a suggestion to exceed or modify.

Before you load up for a day on the water, take a second to know your numbers. A little knowledge at the dock can make for a safer, better day on the lake.

How much horsepower does your boat actually need?

It’s a little more complicated than choosing the biggest motor your boat is rated for.

Start with weight. The boat itself is only part of the equation. Fuel, passengers, coolers, fishing gear and everything else you bring aboard add weight, and that affects acceleration, cruising speed and overall performance.

Then think about how you use your boat. A boat that spends most of its time cruising with two people has different demands than one regularly carrying a full crew, pulling a tube or loaded down for a day of fishing.

Your setup matters too. Hull design, prop selection, engine height and weight distribution can all change how efficiently your horsepower is translated into performance on the water.

Your capacity plate tells you the maximum horsepower your boat is designed to handle, but maximum horsepower and the right horsepower are not always the same thing.

A good rule of thumb? Don’t shop horsepower by the number alone. Shop for the way you’ll actually use the boat. The goal is a setup that gives you the performance, handling and efficiency you need for the way you actually boat.
