If you've been renting a skid steer for most of the season, there's a decent chance you've already crossed the break-even point for buying one. The numbers in this post are specific: a mid-size machine rented at an all-in $2,000 per month costs $24,000 over a year. A comparable used machine purchased outright can run $12,000 to $18,000, with annual ownership costs between $3,000 and $5,500. The crossover arrives at 7.5 months of equivalent use.

Government surplus auctions are worth a close look here. Municipalities and public agencies retire equipment on scheduled cycles, not because machines are failing, which means documented maintenance histories and pricing that often comes in below dealer retail. The full break-even framework, plus a practical buyer's checklist for surplus equipment, is in the post.

The question we get more than any other: “What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever sold on Municibid?”

Fair warning. It’s almost never a truck.

A Pennsylvania police department closed for good and listed the McGruff the Crime Dog costume. Head, gloves, two coats, $405. The listing helpfully noted the coats need washing.

Hanover, New Hampshire sold its firehouse pole. Eighteen feet of brass, disassembled into a 12-foot section and a 6-foot section, $3,100.

Upper Providence Township, Pennsylvania sold a barn for one dollar. The catch: you take it apart and haul it away yourself.

Swipe for all 20. A phrenology head. A 1972 polygraph. A Dance Dance Revolution cabinet. Ten weathered playground spring riders. A caboose. A fire truck simulator that cost $202,000 new and sold for $5,600. And a former National Guard armory that went for $930,000.

Every one of them real surplus, listed by a real agency, with the money going back to that community.

New listings post every day. Come see what your neighbors are parting with.

If you're shopping for a used Ford F-150, the model year matters more than almost anything else. The 2004 F-150, for example, drew more than 2,000 NHTSA safety complaints, the highest of any F-150 ever built. A faulty aluminum cylinder head caused spark plugs to seize or blow out, and when the engine finally gave up, repairs averaged nearly $6,000. Ford made incremental fixes rather than a redesign, so the 2005-2007 trucks carried similar risks.

On the flip side, the 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, and 2020 model years are consistently rated the most reliable. Our full guide walks through every generation so you know exactly what you're getting before you buy.

Some Crown Vics have passed 300,000 miles, and it's not luck. Ford's 4.6-liter V8 was engineered for fleet punishment, and with routine synthetic oil changes and periodic checks on the fuel filter and water pump, these cars just keep going.

That said, not every model year earned that reputation. The 2008 Crown Victoria is widely considered the worst of the run, with transmission trouble, blown head gaskets, and fuel pump failures cited by owners. The 2004 model, on the other hand, brought bulletproof doors and improved powertrain stability for police use. Our latest post breaks down which years to seek out and which to skip, along with a practical checklist for buying a retired Police Interceptor.

Thinking about buying a used Chevy Impala? The model year matters more than you might expect. The 1994-1996 Impala SS, nearly 30 years old, lands on the recommended list thanks to its 5.7L V8 and collectible status. Meanwhile, the 2014 Impala, fresh off a full redesign, lands on the avoid list for electrical problems, steering failures, and safety recalls that came with being a first-year model.

The full guide breaks down every generation, the years worth considering, and the ones to skip. It also covers where to find government-surplus Impalas with complete maintenance records.

Not all Ram 1500s are created equal. The 2003 model became notorious for automatic transmission failures and electrical problems that left owners with expensive repair bills. The 2011 added its own chapter with TIPM module failures and premature engine issues. But the 2014 and 2015 models? Widely considered the most reliable years in the truck's history, with a new EcoDiesel V6 that buyers still talk about today. If you're shopping for a used Ram 1500, knowing which years to target and which to avoid can save you a lot of money. The full breakdown is worth a read.
