Your communication sets the tone for your team's success. Empathy, clear communication, and adaptability pave the way for a harmonious and productive work environment. Here are four common leadership communication styles. Do you see yourself?
FOUR LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION STYLES
Directive: Top-down, Operational
Tone and pace connote a serious attitude and no-nonsense urgency. Words are task-oriented and communicated in a logical, linear manner.
COLLABORATIVE: PARTICIPATORY, INQUIRING AND EMOTIVE
The purpose of this style of communication is to empower and facilitate the sharing of information, perceptions, and opinions to increase ownership of the outcome.
When asking questions, inquire to understand all points of view, rather than change minds or opinions.
CONSULTATIVE: CONSULTATIVE, SUPPORTIVE AND RELATIONAL
Consultative communication uses open-ended questions to get all opinions, to uncover hidden issues, and reveal personal agendas. Communication is relationship-focused first, task-oriented second. Leaders show a supportive role through active listening and only giving input in a thoughtful, deliberate manner. The goal is to encourage group decisions.
VISIONARY: CONSENSUS-BUILDING, RESOURCE FOR OPTIONS
In exploring consensus for a vision, leaders may use storytelling as a strategy to help the group connect the present state to the future. Consensus-building communication seeks agreement of opinion based on mutual consideration and respect. Leaders must attach emotion to the greater good to inspire group engagement in tasks to achieve the vision.
