For the most part, this Motley Fool article on insurance funded preneed contract is accurate. Individuals over the age of 70 will find preneed insurance expensive, particularly when paying with installments. But, the article's suggestion that an individual would be better off when investing for a 10% return. Who gets a 10% return on a $15,000 trust fund? A 1% return is more likely.

The costs outweigh the benefits.

As the following Policygenius article explains, there are low cost options for obtaining a power of attorney. But, you may need to consult with an attorney to make sure the document accomplishes your personal goals. A Missouri resident recently contacted us about a funeral home rejecting her right to direct the funeral of a friend. She had a power of attorney, and Missouri law permits individuals to give right of sepulcher through a power of attorney. But specific language is required, and this lady's document did not include that language. Accordingly, the funeral homes was correct to reject the power of attorney.

A power of attorney might cost a few hundred dollars if you use a lawyer, but you can also make one for free and only pay notary fees.
