Skunk fact nobody asked for: they don't hibernate, even here in northern Arizona. 🦨

University of Arizona Extension says this spring's young skunks are on their own by early fall, and with winter coming, a warm, protected den is high on the list: under the deck, in a crawlspace, behind the shed, or through a gap in the foundation.

Make your place less appealing:
• Clear out brush piles, stacked lumber, and junk
• Keep pet food in a sealed container or inside
• Close foundation openings with hardware cloth
• Give any skunk you meet lots of room. Please.

Pretty sure one has already moved in? We'll take care of it humanely and seal up so the next one doesn't try the same den.

Not sure whether that's a mouse or just your imagination? 🔎 University of Arizona Cooperative Extension (Yavapai County) lists the signs:

🐭 Droppings about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, rod-shaped with pointed ends
🐭 Gnaw marks on wood, cardboard, and soft plastic
🐭 Dirty rub marks along baseboards and walls
🐭 Chewed cereal, seeds, and other pantry food

Their first step: keep mice out and cut off access to food, water, and shelter. They also note droppings can spread illnesses like Salmonella, so skip the bare-handed cleanup.

See a horseshoe-shaped mound of dirt in the yard? Congratulations, you may have a pocket gopher. (Not the prize anyone wants.) 🕳️

Gophers are common across northern Arizona, and they're more than a lawn problem. They eat roots, chew irrigation lines, and leave tunnels that can collapse under people, pets, or livestock. A garden can disappear fast.

We'll find the burrows, take care of the gophers, and level out the mounds so your yard can start to recover. The sooner you call, the less there is to repair.

Aspens around Flagstaff typically peak in early to mid October, and Oak Creek Canyon's color builds from late October into November.

NAME THAT NOISE 🎧 (northern Arizona attic edition)

🐿️ Scampering in the daytime: probably squirrels
🐀 Scratching or scurrying at night: mice, rats, or pack rats
🦝 Heavy thumps and dragging: think raccoon
🦇 Squeaking or fluttering around dusk: bats

Fun (and slightly alarming) fact from Arizona Game & Fish: every fall, black bears can spend up to 20 hours a day eating, taking in as many as 20,000 calories daily to fatten up for winter. 🐻🍂

If you live at higher elevations, like Flagstaff, Munds Park, Williams, or Pine-Strawberry, that makes trash cans, pet food, bird feeders, and greasy grills very interesting. AZGFD's guide has the full rundown on keeping bears wild.

October skunk update: the juvenile skunks born this spring are now on their own, and they're out looking for a den. Under a deck, in a crawlspace, behind a shed... they're not picky. 🦨

A few tips: keep pet food inside, secure your trash, and never try to move a skunk yourself. (Trust us, nobody wins.)

Seeing one stumbling around, acting aggressive, or out in broad daylight? Keep your distance and call animal control.

If one has already moved in, we'll take care of it with humane trapping or a one-way door, then seal the gaps so the next one doesn't get ideas.
