I finally have a chance to catch up and take a breath after a great weekend. Friday we headed to Morven Park for our first show of the season, so of course that night our beautiful For Fun HTF aka Fiona gave birth to a handsome c**t by Kjento. Laura and I brought him home yesterday.

Saturday and Sunday I showed Prom King LS (Jovi) owned by Amy N Jeff Merryman who we imported 2 months ago from Lombardo Sporthorses. While our scores didn't reflect, it was a great outing for him. He was ridden all over the grounds and handled everything like a champ. He had some great moments in the ring but it's a big scary world out there with cold, wind, running dogs and children kicking a ball and running down hills. I am super proud of him and feel that he has a great future. He's a very special boy.

I have to thank Amy for her support and trust in me with our boy. Laura Serkes and Holly Wilmoth for their ground support and encouragement. Ryder Saddles and Finger Lakes Saddler for my amazing saddle and The Distinguished Rider for my absolutely gorgeous new boots!

What a year 2023 was. So many changes and amazing things happening. I can not thank all of my friends and clients enough for the fabulous year it was. While there were the low points, like the retirement of my beloved boy Sandro, there were the amazing highs of another trip to USDF Finals with Jill Taylor 's very special boy Rufano. I found an amazing and inspirational coach to work with in Kathy Connelly who has taught me to believe in myself and my abilities. Finger Lakes Saddler has kept me in the best Ryder Saddles that arw fitted perfectly to my horses. The Distinguished Rider has helped me to create the most beautiful and comfortable pair of boots. Marengo Equine Bodywork, Brooke Baker, and Justin Smith CF keep my horses comfortable and moving their best. I can not possibly thank everyone enough. This coming year is going to be even more amazing!

Where to even begin... what an amazing weekend at the Region 1 GAIG Championships. I had the honor of competing Jill Taylor's spectacular horse Rufano. He has really come on strong this year and proved it to us at this show. We placed Reserve Grand Champion in First Level Open with a 73.056% from both judges in an extremely competitive class. I can not possibly begin to thank everyone but massive thanks to Jill, to Laura Serkes for providing a beautiful facility to train out of. To Chloë Meyerhoff for keeping Rue feeling fantastic. To Finger Lakes Saddler, Lauren Mills for providing me with amazing Ryder Saddles to sit on my horses in. And to Marissa Gentner of The Distinguished Rider for my spectacular boots!

It was so great to spend the weekend with Jill, Laura, Holly Wilmoth, Arianna Almeida, and Mindy Elgart. I love our horse show family!

This is not mine and I wish I knew who wrote it to give them credit. This so true, my blood, sweat, and tears are a part of this farm. This farm is my heart.

Appreciate your trainer.

They spend way more hours at work than you could even imagine. They are here six if not seven days a week every week. They work holidays. They work weekends. And just because their office is outside and they get to be surrounded by beautiful animals the whole time does not mean they aren’t working. The barn to you is your sanctuary. It’s your escape. It’s your place to vent. Your place to relax. Your place to unwind. That is not what the barn is to them. While they have moments of serenity when everything is quiet, this is still their job. they are still on the clock. They still need to be on their game. Always.

Their job is not just riding. They deal with all of you every day. Long before and long after they have come and gone from the barn. During dinners. During drinks with friends. During family time. On days off. They are here for you.

They care. They care more than you could ever know. Each and every horse is a part of their soul. They know their mannerisms. They meticulously watch their weight, their movement, monitor what they eat and how much of it, how much they work, whether they are happy doing their job, and how to make them go in a way that pleases you without jeopardizing them. They stay up late with them if they are sick. They write down every time they batted an eyelash wrong. And they remember what they need when.

They take pride in them going well for you. They listen to every flaw you find with them, even if it is in fact your flaw, and try to help them do their job better. When you are unhappy with how they go, they strive to never let it happen again, even if your expectations are unreasonable. They bend over backwards to make your horse perfect, even if what you’re asking for is a horse without spirit, or personality. They stand up for them when they can, trying their best not to make you upset in the process. They are their life’s work, and they know them inside and out.

They listen to you. Whether you are rational or not. They remain calm when you bring the stress of your day job to the barn and take it all out on your horse and on us. They pick up the pieces when you’ve been unforgiving with your horse, who was simply surprised by your lack of patience after a long day. They are your rock, your shoulder to cry on, and your horses.

When they go home, they still reply to your texts and your emails and your calls. They are never off the clock. They take in stride as best we can your rants of frustration when your horse or your riding isn’t exactly where you want it to be exactly when you want it. They take the blame. For you. For your horse. For everything.

And yet here they are. Still showing up. Still being here for you. For your horse. No matter how you treat them. Regardless of whether you deserve them. They are here.

Pictures do not do these saddle justice. I have had my beautiful black and purple Ryder Saddles for about 6 months now, Jill Taylor just was surprised with her beautiful brown one. Let me tell you, these are the most comfortable saddles that I have ever sat in. Finger Lakes Saddler & Lauren Mills is such a pleasure to work with. These saddles are so customizable and the price point will make your jaw drop as you're going to only pay half of what you would with other brands. I can not recommend them enough! Thank you Candice and Ryder Saddles for your support!

A week ago I was able to attend the 2022 Charles de Kunffy clinic hosted by Team Tate Academy. What an amazing learning experience, the improvements in myself andnmy horse over the three days was just incredible. I can't thank JJ Tate enough for this opportunity and for all of her help. Being able to work with Charles and with JJ has been one of the greatest things to happen to my riding. I came home filled with confidence and ideas and I have been really enjoying seeing the techniques applied to my training horses and seeing my students learn them. Thank you so much JJ for all of your support. Thank you Finger Lakes Saddler for keeping my horse perfectly fitted in his Ryder saddle.

“Select your trainers carefully. Observe how the horses interact with them.

Watch how the most decorated horse in the barn is treated. Watch how the least quality horse in the barn is treated, because EVERY horse deserves to think it’s a champion at the end of the day.

Look at the workouts, attitudes, and relationships between the trainer and their strongest riders. Look at the workouts, attitudes & relationship between the trainer and their most limited riders.

How do they treat their team members? Does their staff like them? Are the other clients happy? What dreams is your trainer chasing?

Choose a trainer that lives the values that matter to you. Choose wisely, and trust the process.

Not every horse will be a grand champion. Not every lesson horse will be a walk in the park. Not every rider will win the roses. Not every ride will be easy. Not every prospect will work out. The challenges ahead are inevitable.

Spend your time and money to be with a team that you believe in, a team that has your best interest at heart and is honest with you as they help you and/or your horse stride towards greatness- whatever it is you define as such.

Select your trainers carefully- and give it your best shot. Greatness isn’t common; but it certainly doesn’t occur unless the trainers, clients and horses are all giving it their best shot.” —Unknown ❤️
