It’s a bittersweet day here at Plastics Unlimited.
Today, we are removing the original thermoforming machine that started it all nearly 35 years ago — an Osborn single-station thermoformer.
The story behind this machine is one we will never forget.
Nearly 35 years ago, Terry, Nancy, and Gene Kieffer bought this used thermoforming machine at an auction in the Quad Cities for $8,500. At the time, they didn’t know much about plastics or thermoforming, but they believed the plastics industry had tremendous growth potential.
The auctioneer told them that the molds, raw materials, and customers would all come with the machine.
There was just one small problem he conveniently forgot to mention…
The business had closed its doors more than a year earlier.
There were no customers.
So, with an $8,500 thermoforming machine and no customers, the journey began.
The machine was brought back to the family farm in Preston, Iowa, where it was installed in a machine shed that wasn’t even wired for 480-volt electricity. It didn’t have a concrete floor. And they had very little knowledge of the plastics industry.
What they did have was a willingness to take a chance, a belief in the potential of the industry, and the determination to figure it out.
That old Osborn machine went on to become the foundation of Plastics Unlimited. For nearly 35 years, we have relied on it almost every day. It has produced countless parts, helped us serve our customers, and played a huge role in building the company we are today.
It’s definitely going to be hard to see it leave.
But this is also a reminder of how far we’ve come.
The machine that once sat in a farm machine shed is now being replaced because we need newer, more efficient equipment with advanced controls, faster setups, and greater capabilities to keep up with our growth.
We are incredibly proud of our history, but we are even more excited about the future.
Over the years, we have continued to invest in people, equipment, technology, and capabilities — and those investments are helping us grow, better serve our customers, and continue to push Plastics Unlimited forward as an industry leader.
From an $8,500 used machine, no customers, no concrete floor, and no 480-volt power…
To where we are today.
That’s quite a journey.
Thank you to Terry, Nancy, and Gene for taking the chance nearly 35 years ago — and thank you to this old Osborn for helping us get started. We are looking forward to the next chapter!
