I’m offering a 90-min virtual workshop on July 11th on Understanding Burnout and Maintaining Healthy Boundaries. Tickets are $35 ($20 with promo code: burnout24.) Don't miss this opportunity to take proactive steps toward improving your well-being and the overall health and motivation of your team. This is also a great topic for coaches who want to learn more about burnout to better support their clients.

The word “burnout” has become ubiquitous -- it seems to sum up the stress, exhaustion, and disaffection that have impacted so many during and in the wake of the Covid epidemic. We are through that crisis, but the scars and ripple effects remain. Now, confronted with required days back in the office, two days per week, three days per week, how can you ensure that you can reset our work-life balance to a proper level?

What does the term burnout actually mean? How does burnout differ from fatigue or stress? How do you know if you’re burned out? And what can individuals, employers, and society do to combat workplace burnout?

In this interactive virtual session, you will learn about the conditions and circumstances that lead to burnout; how to recognize the signs and symptoms; and strategies for prevention and recovery. There are six drivers of burnout. Understanding these drivers is important for both individuals and organizations seeking to foster healthier work environments. I will present using slides and there will also be a breakout group exercise. Participants will leave the session with a PDF of the slide deck that includes a curated resource list of helpful articles, practical tools, and actionable strategies to benefit themselves and their teams.

For more information, including learning objectives and agenda for the session, please visit the registration page.

Many leaders are struggling to lead virtual and hybrid teams. CEOs have announced broad brush return-to-office mandates establishing a set minimum number of days per week in office. We have even seen leaders begin to blame diminished innovation outcomes on work-from-home rather than their own shortcomings and inability to adapt. Mid-level managers have been left on their own to determine the proper balance in-office and virtual working time for themselves and their teams.

As someone who spent many years prior to the pandemic leading and working in virtual and hybrid teams, I put together this short article to summarize some insights based on my experience. For the record, I am also someone who truly values the connection that can be accomplished through in-person work. I love getting coffee with colleagues and attending off-sites and on-sites! I always relished my office visits all around the world when I was a hybrid guy (before there was a name for that!)

I think a lot of people are starting to write off virtual work because they did it badly during the pandemic under emergency circumstances. For those people, I hope they are willing to take a fresh approach and look at ways to weave some of these new leadership techniques into their repertoire. To be an effective leader of a virtual or hybrid work team you must demonstrate the same skills and sensibilities as a leader of an in-person team. You just have to do them better!

As the year concludes, my coaching and consulting business continues to grow. I am grateful to my clients who have placed their trust in me. The highlight of the year was definitely my trip to Singapore(!) on behalf of Rutgers Business School Executive Education. It was a pleasure working with global leaders at container shipping leader Ocean Network Express. I coached 10 individual leaders throughout the year and then facilitated their graduation and final presentation session. One of the things that made this experience so great was that I was very nervous for this trip! It was an 18 hour flight, one of the longest in the world, and I had never previously traveled to Asia. So this trip represented not only a wonderful professional opportunity, but also a chance to push beyond my comfort zone.

It’s also been invigorating to be a part of the global community of coaches spanning from our amazing ICF New Jersey Charter Chapter all the way to the ICF Singapore Chapter I was lucky to visit during my trip. I’ve felt so much support and camaraderie from this community since I started my business. I’m grateful to my many friends, mentors and wise, experienced coaches who continue to inspire me and guide my learning as a coach and entrepreneur. Here are some other highlights from 2023!

🔸 Coached individual clients in biotech, cybersecurity, digital marketing, non-profit, renewable energy and streaming media.
🔸 Launched an internal coaching program with a consulting client, a global distributor of professional audio/visual and technology products.
🔸 An individual client was accepted to one of the top Executive MBA programs.
🔸 A client successfully escaped a manager they described as a “sociopath” by networking and engineering a move to another team internally at their company.
🔸 Attended 25th Georgetown MBA Reunion in Washington, D.C.
🔸 Organized a virtual expert panel “LinkedIn Best Practices for Coaches.”
🔸 Organized a virtual speaker session on “Neurodiversity in Coaching.”
🔸 Developed and implemented a Hubspot CRM database to use for individual marketing outreach, newsletters and contact management for past, current and future clients.
🔸 Set up Calendly for scheduling! https://lnkd.in/eCz2z95j

I just concluded coaching relationships with several clients, so I have a few individual coaching slots open for 2024. Please reach out if you or anyone in your organization needs leadership development or a thought partner as they plan out their goals for next year.

Wishing everyone a great holiday break and start to 2024!
