Teacups. Spatulas. Nutcrackers cracking almonds while five little figures look on. Christmas stockings hung in two neat rows. Pan flutes and a maraca. Hammers and bottles built right into the letterforms. The Guna took the ordinary furniture of daily life and gave it the same reverence, the same layers, and the same blazing color as the sacred stuff.

Eleven complete Guna blouses — panel, yoke, gathered sleeves, rick-rack trim, printed hem border, all of it. Front and back panels worked as a matched pair with deliberate small variations, because no Guna woman repeated herself exactly. Velvet yokes. Sheer organza. This is the mola in the form it was actually made for, before collectors started cutting them out and framing them.

The flag of Panama flanked by spirit figures. A black cat sitting square on the map of the country. A portrait of Alonso Fernandez. Political history, recorded in three layers of cotton by the people living through it.

Jaguars. Caimans with fish in their jaws. Pelicans wearing spectacles. Toucans, thunderbirds, tapirs, a coiled serpent, a sow nursing her piglets, a two-headed chicken. In Guna cosmology animals are not decoration — they're intermediaries, kin, and cautionary tales. The alligator and the monkey even come captioned.
