Trooper Car Hit by Semi During Traffic Stop
Posey County - May 27, 2026, at approximately 10:05 a.m., Sergeant Russ Werkmeister was conducting a vehicle inspection on I-64 near Poseyville when his semi-marked Indiana State Police Commission was struck by a semi-tractor trailer traveling past. The semi was driven by Randal N. Boring, age 55, of Potosi, MO. Sergeant Werkmeister was able to stop the semi and was not injured.
Boring was not arrested but cited for:
β’ Failure to Yield to Emergency Vehicle
β’ Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle While Ill or Fatigued
The Indiana State Police would like to remind everyone to move over for emergency vehicles and get plenty of sleep before driving.
Indiana's "Move Over or Slow Down" law (IC 9-21-8-35) requires drivers approaching any stationary vehicle with flashing lights or hazard lights activated to safely change lanes away from the vehicle. If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, drivers must reduce their speed to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit.
Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) while ill or fatigued is strictly prohibited. Federal regulations mandate that drivers must stop driving immediately if their alertness or ability is impaired, and employers cannot require them to drive in this condition.
