According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the majority of homes lost to wildfire are first ignited by embers and small flames, not the fire itself.

The key is understanding and managing your Home Ignition Zone (HIZ), the area around your property that extends up to 200 feet from the foundation. The NFPA divides the Home Ignition Zone into three sections: the Immediate Zone, the Intermediate Zone, and the Extended Zone. Each plays a critical role in wildfire prevention.

May is National Wildfire Awareness Month, and, as the last few years have demonstrated, wildfires have a significant impact beyond the fire zone. Smoke and embers can travel miles, impacting homes and businesses far and wide.

3 Steps for a Safer Season:
• The 5-Foot Rule: Eliminate fuel for a fire. Clear all dead leaves, pine needles, and mulch within 5 feet of your foundation.
• Screen It In: Ensure attic and crawlspace vents are covered with 1/8-inch metal mesh to block flying embers.
• Check Your Filters: Wildfire season is also smoke season. Choose high-efficiency HVAC filters for your home or business.
