Jim Collins, the author of "Good to Great", reports that most great companies do not resort to layoffs. Instead, they have a "culture of discipline" philosophy.
A culture of discipline means hiring extremely qualified people from the beginning. Qualified people are most likely disciplined workers who don't need management holding their hands in order to get their job done.
Take the time you need to hire the right people. Then, when trouble comes, you know your team is built to handle it—even if it needs a little reorganizing first. And, your employees will benefit from your commitment to them, adding a sense of security through those tumultuous times.
Great companies know the people are not the problem. Great leadership is about organizing the workforce and managing it effectively—not just swinging the ax.
