Woodward and Father

Woodward and Father About Woodward
Job Position: Designer of goods, maker of palettes. Woodward (aka Katie) is a freelance scenic painter based in New York City.

Honoring a long-standing tradition of daughter saying “I designed this thing…” and dad saying “I can make that.”

Offering a selection of handmade sketchboards and palettes since 2017 She teaches scene painting at Montclair State University. When she isn't painting theatrical scenery, she paints watercolors (or as she likes to say, “she paints and she paints”). Katie sells her urban sketching and

studio art on her other Etsy store, RamblingSketcher. She is an active member of the New York City Urban Sketchers and manages their social media. In her nearly non-existent spare time she can be found singing karaoke (poorly), embroidering (adequately), attempting to keep her houseplants alive (middling at best), or baking (well), and coming up with fun new ways for her Dad to spend his semi-retirement (excellent). About Father
Job Position: Cutter of boards, driller of holes, origin of entrepreneurial genes. Father (aka Dick Woodward) is a semi-retired consultant to the biotech, pharma and specialty chemicals industries. In his semi-retirement, he works with start-up companies (he’s co-founded a couple) and advises a venture capital fund. In various parts of his life, he has been an industrial research scientist (he has a Ph.D. in something weird), race car mechanic, marketer, salesman, Jeopardy contestant, Vice President of a couple of biotech companies, CEO/COO of a medical device company that he co-founded and a Board member of a Habitat for Humanity affiliate. He has been married to Karen for half his life (33 years and counting), and they are the proud parents of 2 daughters – Katie (aka Woodward) and Hilary. In his spare time, he plays golf (badly), annoys fish in the Florida Keys (fairly well), builds furniture, masquerades as a carpenter on Habitat for Humanity build sites (adequately), and manufactures products for Woodward and Father (for you to judge).

Our Large Sketchboard is often my least-photographed, mostly because I generally work small and it is most frequently used while I'm home and working on my couch instead of my work table. But it's the board I usually take out when I'm event sketching! Seen here at a wedding a couple of years ago. That's a 9×12 painting, for size reference.

You've maybe wondered why we haven't offered our Big Brush or Limited Palettes in a while...well, our supplier discontinued the big brush pans, so we had to discontinue them. We are still good with the square pans and largest pans, so we are welcoming a 9 Square Palette and 5 Pan Palette to the ranks instead! Sad to have to see the big brush pans go, but hoping you all enjoy these! Would have liked to sneak a row of standard pans in there, but there's not enough space. Both these and the accompanying pan packs have just been added to the shop.

Mini board and unlimited palette in action in London last fall! Using my favorite clip light to see since I was painting at night, a tablet holder strapped to the back as a hand hold (you can see the clips on the top and left sides), and two upside down clip fridge magnets to hold the palette.

We are adding some new palette options to the shop this week, starting with a limited edition vintage tablet tin palette! This is actually the one I've been using for years (and didn't bother to wipe down from my last use, oops!), but the ones added to the shop are the same size. Cute, tiny, and very portable. I love attaching it to a board using a money clip with a couple of magnets attached. Seen here with our Itty Bitty board. Head over to our link in bio to check out the shop!

We just added something new to the shop! We call these "board blanks" - boards at all our usual sizes but that don't have any holes in them! Perfect for anyone not interested in a water cup and who doesn't want holes for tools, just a board to work on. To order, just go into the listing of the size board you are interested in and choose "no water cup/no holes" in the drop down menus when you are adding it to your cart. We have board blanks available in every size we carry boards in, from Itty Bitty up to Extra Large. The one pictured here is an Original. Link to the shop in our bio, and look out for some limited edition palettes next week!

Hi, y'all! After nearly 6 years in business keeping the same prices we set in 2017, we finally have to bow to inflation and increase our prices. This decision hasn't come lightly, but has become a necessity to keep up with the price increases on our materials. However! We know this is going to be a huge surprise, and wanted to give anyone who has had their eye on something to get it before we change the prices. The change isn't going to go into effect until April 17th, to give everyone plenty of time to get an order in. Depending on the volume of orders, it may also cause us to take longer to ship: thanks in advance for your patience! Our updated price list that will take effect on April 17th is below. We have some other fun things coming up in April, so stay tuned!

From both me and Dad: thank you so much to everyone who has shopped with us throughout the years! For something we started on a whim, it's success has been a great surprise and it gives us a lot of joy to continue to bring sketching supplies to such a wonderful community.

Mini with two cups: $35

Hello again! Did you miss us? We've still been making palettes and boards (thanks for continuing to shop during our social media hiatus!). I spent a good chunk of time this year writing a book (a new Urban Sketching Handbook: Understanding Light, now available for preorder anywhere books are sold!) but have a bit more time now. I took this photo while sketching on the Yale campus a few months back, with my usual Original Sketch Board and Unlimited Palette. Hoping to get some limited edition palettes in the store this fall!
