The magic trick you never want in your operatory. 😳
When a patient closes their lips around a saliva ejector with no backflow valve, they create a seal — the line pressure drops — and fluid can flow BACK into their mouth. You just turned your suction into a straw. 🥤
What's in that line? Biofilm and whatever was suctioned before. The CDC has flagged this for years, and research found about 1 in 5 patients who sealed their lips had backflow.
The fix:
• Use ejectors with a backflow prevention valve
• Train your team to tell patients: don't close your lips around the tip
• Keep the tubing below the mouth
Small detail. Big deal. Go check your ejectors.

Removing amalgam? Your respirator isn’t optional — and neither is OSHA. 🛑
If you follow the SDS for mercury, your team needs a NIOSH-certified respirator (not a surgical mask, not a KN95). And the moment you put staff in respirators, OSHA 1910.134 kicks in: a written program run by a Respiratory Protection Administrator, medical evaluations, and fit testing.
Improper respirators and half-followed protocols don’t protect your team — they expose them.
