The Providence Fire Department traces its roots back to 1754, when it was first established as a volunteer force. On March 1, 1854, it became a fully paid professional department, making it the second-oldest continually operated professional fire department in the United States. Today, more than 450 Firefighter/EMTs and 23 civilian staff proudly continue t
hat tradition, responding to over 45,000 calls for service each year. Serving the 180,000 residents of Providence and the 300,000 workers and visitors who come into the city daily, the department provides comprehensive emergency services including fire suppression, advanced life support, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and marine operations. Its members are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, while also focusing on prevention through inspections, plan reviews, code enforcement, fire investigations, and public education. In recent years it has launched programs such as the Mobile Integrated Health initiative, the EMS Bicycle Unit, and the Cadet Program, which provides new pathways into the fire service. Significant investments—supported by local and federal funding—have modernized technology, expanded training, and upgraded apparatus, including new engines, a tower ladder, and advanced rescue units. Recognized as an ISO Class 1 department, Providence Fire continues to set the standard for professionalism and service. Guided by its motto—“In Omnia Paratus – In All Things Ready”—the men and women of the Providence Fire Department remain committed to protecting the community with dedication, respect, and compassion.
