SHOWERS & THUNDERSTORMS OVERNIGHT ALONG & SOUTH US 460/360

Thunderstorms across portions of Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia, will continue moving eastward into Southwest Virginia this evening. Some storms could be on the strong to possibly severe side through this evening. A surface low-pressure system (containing moisture from the remnants of Arthur,) combined with a cold front, will bring showers and thunderstorms to southern and southeastern Virginia from this evening through the overnight hours. Rain is expected to move out of Southern and Southeastern Virginia by Friday morning.

While forecast models differ on rainfall amounts and intensity, most locations are expected to receive between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain, with isolated areas seeing 1 to 2 inches. While this rainfall will not be enough to end drought conditions, it will provide some much-needed moisture across the region.

THURSDAY'S FUTURECAST
Thunderstorms across West Virginia and Western Maryland will weaken as they move south and east this morning. We will watch for additional thunderstorms later this afternoon into this evening, possibly strong to severe. Low pressure will move along a cold front tonight into Friday morning and bring moderate rain across Southern and Southeastern Virginia, possibly as far north as Metro Richmond. Some locations across Southern and Southeastern Virginia could see a few inches of rain before the system moves out by early Friday afternoon.

SCATTERED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE THURSDAY AFTERNOON INTO THURSDAY NIGHT
Much of the area remains under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather on Thursday. The primary threats will be damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and periods of very heavy rainfall.

A cold front moving through the region late Thursday, combined with an area of low pressure tracking from the Texas Coast into the Southeast, may interact to produce a corridor of heavier rain and thunderstorms across portions of Southern and Southeastern Virginia from late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

This setup bears close monitoring, and we will continue to evaluate future model guidance for any changes in the forecast.
