In order to not bid a job below your cost, you must first complete a take-off, and then put your estimate together by adding overhead (If you don’t know what overhead percentage to carry, you should! Ask your accountant!), profit, quotes, and direct job expenses.

Every seasoned estimator should know how to make “strategic” cuts to labor or material based on known factors, and if you don’t know how/why to do this, reach out! With all that being said, if you do all these things, if you are awarded the project, you should be able to reach your anticipated profit goals after covering all costs.

What do you do if the general contractor says “Your number is good, but Electrical Contractor Y can do it for $15,000 less.” Well, since you’ve done a take-off, you should know “how low you can go.” It is better to walk away than to accept a project where it will be difficult, if not impossible, to meet your profit goals.

Nothing is worse than “needing” work! That’s why you have to bid while you are busy.

A healthy contractor should always have a backlog of bids to ensure an even flow of work, cash flow, and ultimately profit. When you are not busy, you run the risk of making bad decisions out of desperation, and that’s never a good thing.

Make sure to review all Invitations to Bids, your local job contracting board, and leads from the Blue Book of Building and Construction (if you participate) to see what projects are a good fit for your company and your schedule.

Review the start and completion dates of each project to ensure that in the event of multiple project awards, you are able to manage and complete the project.
