Yesterday in a post about Putnam's Beautification Day, I said "Picking up litter is a leadership skill" and I really meant it.
That is just one of many lessons I learned while working for the superintendent of a large vocational school district.
He was the Big Boss of the school system but any time he was walking the school halls and saw a Snickers wrapper or a broken pencil or litter of any kind, he would stop, stoop down, pick up the trash and toss it in the nearest bin.
And if any students had noticed "The Doc" had taken the time to pick up someone else's trash, he'd say something quick and casual and friendly to them like "We gotta take pride in our school!"
A real lead by example type of boss (which is really the only way to do it). And it worked. Students, staff like me, a lot of us got in the same habit of picking up trash regardless of who "should" have picked it up instead.
That's the sort of leadership exemplified by Putnam's Beautification Day. Demonstrating big pride by taking care of little things like litter, regardless of who made the mess :)
P.S. Earl Rosebrooks was jealous of the hot dog costume and used AI to "fix" the photo I posted yesterday. I know I've been railing against AI a lot lately, but I approve of its use in this context 100%
