Generational divide! Don’t assume that your kids do or don't want to inherit your possessions. Have the conversation while you can, while you’re in good health and can make decisions collaboratively. Doing this before a crisis will reduce stress and make sure your wishes are respected and followed.

In today's fast paced world, it is easy to do get distracted or interrupted. When you are not fully present while doing something, you end up rereading, trying to recall where you left off, revisiting tasks. all leading to frustration. Then tasks take far longer than they should have often leading to procrastination and avoidance all together.

Staying total focused and present really pays off in the long run!!!

If you notice something that needs your attention, if it will take less than five minutes, try to do it immediately. Emptying a clean dishwasher takes less time than you think. Tidying up the makeup table while brushing your teeth. Sorting the mail and recycling immediately what you do not want, opening the rest and putting it where it belongs takes far less time than you imagine. Do not let small household tasks pile up; tick off a few of your chores throughout your day.

Regularly revisiting your possessions and releasing what you no longer use, or love keeps your home feeling clutter-free. Yesterday I started working with a new client in her closet. She told me she recently purged and just wanted to be organized. As I pulled hangers off the rod to rearrange, she found herself saying, "I don't want that anymore". We ended up setting aside about 30 items to go for consignment. Another perk was "finding" items she LOVES but couldn't locate. There are many perks to revisiting your possessions often.

At a half dozen client sessions this summer, we have run into items left behind by adult children. My first question is how old is this off spring? If over 30 or living in their own home, my answer is different "Put all of Joey's items in these bins, clearly marked. If Joey lives locally have him put the bins in his car and take them to his home. He can purge and organize there. If Joey does not live locally, put a note in your calendar for when he will be in town for a long weekend. Then have Joey purge out what he does not want to keep and pare down the bin contents. He pays half the postage to ship the contents to his home. Then he won't be tempted to say just ship it all mom. He needs some skin in the game." They all need a specific deadline or it just won't happen.

At a half dozen client sessions this summer, we have run into items left behind by adult children. My first question is how old is this off-spring? If not yet 30 or living in their own home, my answer is often "Put all of Joey's items in these bins, clearly marked and make a note on your calendar for the week of Thanksgiving when Joey will be in your home. Then have Joey purge out what he does not want to keep and pair down the bin contents. They stay tucked in a corner of the attic or basement until he has a home or 30. (whichever comes first)."

Have ONLY what you use and love. Don't let the past or your desire to hold onto things turn your home into a mausoleum. Items left behind by your adult children. Items inherited from grands and parents that really have no use in your home. etc. Each decade is full of blessings. Life moves and changes. The contents of your home shall as well.

During sessions, many of clients will say, "Where should I put this?" I ask them to reframe the question - "Where will I look for this". There is a big difference. You 'could' put it anywhere. The key is to really think about where your mind's eye will go when you are looking for THAT item next. What zone in your home makes the most sense? Then make a home for it THERE. And, always put it BACK there.

If you are fortunate to have BONUS rooms in your home - such as garage, attic, basement, laundry room - these spaces should also have clearly defined zones.

For instance, many basements have spaces - workroom for tools, storage area for bins of holiday decorations, overflow kitchen items, etc. Is it easy to go into your basement to get a hammer and nail to hang a new piece of artwork?

If you are fortunate to have BONUS rooms in your home - such as garage, attic, basement, laundry room - these spaces should also have clearly defined zones.

For instance, many laundry rooms have spaces for - hanging clothes, folding clothes, laundry supplies, maybe even shelves of other cleaning supplies, etc. Is it easy to walk into your laundry room and take care of your wash easily?
