🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨

On Tuesday, Jan. 6, a high-speed pursuit took place in Childress, traveling into Quanah, according to the Childress Police Department.

At approximately 7 p.m., City of Childress and Childress County units were advised of a “Be on the Lookout” (BOLO) for a white Kia in reference to multiple retail theft incidents. At approximately 7:49 p.m., officers observed the vehicle pull into Pilot Travel Center in Childress.

“When officers attempted to make contact, the vehicle fled, nearly striking an officer on foot and almost colliding with another patrol unit as it entered the highway,” Childress Police Chief Jerrald Johnson said. “Officers initiated a high-speed pursuit into Quanah, where the suspect vehicle crashed into an unoccupied building. The occupants fled on foot.”

According to Johnson, one suspect was taken into custody, while a second suspect remains outstanding, despite an extensive search utilizing K-9 units and drones.

No officers were injured during the incident, according to Childress Police Department reports.

“I would like to thank all assisting agencies for their support, including Childress County, Hardeman County, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Texas Game Wardens, the T.L. Roach Unit and K-9 teams,” Johnson said.

Public Statement Regarding City Council Meeting Location
Due to the expectation of a crowd that may exceed the legal occupancy limit of Quanah City Hall, the City of Quanah will be prepared to adjust the location of the upcoming City Council meeting in order to ensure public safety and full compliance with the Texas Open Meetings Act.
In accordance with our City Charter, the meeting will still be called to order at Quanah City Hall at the originally posted time. If the crowd size exceeds the building’s legal capacity, the Council will consider a motion to recess and reconvene at the Three Rivers Ballroom, located at 204 South Main Street, Quanah, Texas. This location has been selected because it can safely accommodate a larger number of attendees if needed.
Mayor Glen Tole and City Administrator David Wilson have determined that preparing for this potential relocation is in the best interest of public safety, transparency, and ensuring that every citizen who wishes to attend has the opportunity to be present.
This temporary adjustment would be made solely to:
• Protect the safety of our citizens
• Comply with fire code and building occupancy requirements
• Ensure that every member of the public has the ability to attend and participate
If required, the amended meeting notice identifying the Three Rivers Ballroom as the alternate location will be posted at City Hall and on the City’s website in compliance with state law.
The City Council and I remain committed to transparency, public access, and open government. We appreciate the community’s understanding as we take the steps necessary to conduct our business safely and in accordance with the law.
