AI can help us write faster. Internal auditors must still think deeper.

Thank you to IIA Greece for inviting me to lead a training session on AI in internal auditing. I appreciated the participants’ thoughtful questions and enthusiasm for applying new tools to their work.

We explored ways to strengthen audit planning, reporting, and business communication while keeping professional judgment, confidentiality, and integrity at the center.

Some of the greatest risks in an organization never appear on a risk register.

They show up in the question no one asks, the concern no one raises, and the conversation everyone avoids.

Thank you to IIA - New York Chapter, IIA - Central Jersey, and IIA New Jersey for inviting me to serve as your keynote speaker. It was an honor to connect with professionals committed to strengthening internal audit.

My message was simple: How we lead influences what people are willing to tell us, and what we are able to see.

Technical expertise helps us identify risk. Self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and courage help us ask difficult questions, listen openly, and create space for honest answers.

That is the heart of Leadership MEQ™: strengthening mindset, emotional intelligence, and leadership qualities to lead with greater clarity and purpose.

I told a room full of internal auditors that AI can now do in minutes what used to take us weeks.

Nobody panicked. Auditors don’t panic. We document the panic, assess the risk, and assign it an owner with a due date. 😄

Thank you, IIA Nigeria, for having me at the 12th Annual Conference to discuss AI and the future of auditing.

My core message:
AI can speed up the audit. Only integrity makes it trustworthy.

AI can find the anomaly, but human judgment, ethics, and professional skepticism are what make the work meaningful.

The tools will keep getting smarter. Our responsibility is to make sure our judgment keeps pace.

It is built when you make time for a difficult conversation. When you clarify an expectation instead of assuming someone understood. When you notice that a team member needs support and choose to ask one more question.

That is what I kept thinking about while facilitating CalCPA’s Legacy leadership training.

We had a small group, which gave every participant room to speak, challenge an idea, and connect what we were learning to the people they lead. I appreciated their honesty. Leadership conversations become much more useful when we can talk about what actually happens at work, including the moments we wish we had handled differently.

Thank you to CalCPA for trusting me with this experience, and to the participants for the thought and energy you brought to it. I hope you left with an insight you can use in your very next conversation.

A workshop can give us language and tools. Our daily choices give those tools meaning.
