Texas Department of Agriculture Highlights
Innovative Maverick County Insectary
By Jose G. Landa
The Texas Department of Agriculture recently visited Kunafin “The Insectary” in Quemado for an upcoming “Texas Our Texas” segment highlighting the innovative agricultural operation and its role in helping farmers protect crops naturally across Texas.
Kunafin specializes in breeding beneficial insects used to combat destructive agricultural pests without relying heavily on chemical pesticides. The operation has become known for its environmentally friendly approach to pest management and sustainable agriculture practices.
Located in western Maverick County, Kunafin has been producing beneficial insects for decades and is considered one of the pioneers in biological pest control programs in Texas and throughout the nation.
Entomologist Frank Junfin, owner of Kunafin Trichogramma Insectary in Quemado, has helped develop natural insect control methods designed to assist farmers, ranchers and agricultural producers in reducing harmful pest populations while protecting crops and livestock operations.
Among the beneficial insects raised at the insectary are Trichogramma wasps, lacewings and fly parasites, which are commonly used in Integrated Pest Management programs. These insects help naturally target pests that damage crops, reducing the need for chemical spraying.
Kunafin distributes beneficial insects to agricultural operations throughout Texas and other parts of the United States, helping support more sustainable farming practices and environmentally conscious agriculture.
The Texas Department of Agriculture works to promote Texas agriculture, assist farmers and ranchers, encourage economic development and support innovative agricultural technologies and practices throughout the state.
State officials visited the Maverick County insectary to showcase how businesses like Kunafin are contributing to the future of agriculture through science-based and environmentally friendly solutions.
The upcoming “Texas Our Texas” segment is expected to spotlight the unique work being done in Quemado and the important role beneficial insects play in supporting Texas agriculture.
