Basics of Financial Reporting for Small Business Owners

A Balance Sheet is a statement of your company’s financial position. Most often used to determine the liquidity of a business. Liquidity is the ability to pay one's debts in a timely manner.
ASSETS - LIABILITIES = EQUITY
what you own - what you owe = what you are worth

Most accounting professionals will list the equation a bit differently
ASSETS = LIABILITIES + EQUITY

An Income Statement is a report of your company’s performance for a period of time; month, quarter, annual.
INCOME - EXPENSES = PROFIT/LOSS
what you earn - what you spent = what is left over

Your profit is added to your equity at the end of each period to strengthen your company’s financial position.

Most small business owners focus on the Income Statement aka Profit and Loss as their business is getting off the ground. It is always a thrill when the profit turns from a negative to a positive number.

Bankers and investors are more interested in your balance sheet. As your business begins to stabilize be sure to keep watch on your balance sheet as well.
