We’ve seen a noticeable influx of calls recently involving copperheads around homes and properties. Late summer is an active time for snakes, and copperheads are one of the venomous species we regularly encounter here in Virginia.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Watch where you put your hands and feet. Copperheads rely heavily on camouflage and can be extremely difficult to see among leaves, mulch, rocks, wood piles, and landscaping.

• Use caution when moving items outdoors. Firewood, landscape timbers, tarps, debris, stored materials, and other objects sitting on the ground can provide excellent hiding places.

• Keep vegetation maintained. Tall grass, heavy ground cover, overgrown landscaping, and brush can provide both cover for snakes and habitat for the rodents and other prey they feed on.

• Reduce clutter around the home. Limiting hiding places around foundations, sheds, decks, porches, and outbuildings can make the property less attractive.

• Don’t attempt to handle a snake you can’t positively identify. Trying to capture or move a venomous snake unnecessarily puts you within striking distance.

• Keep children and pets away. If you locate a suspected copperhead, give it plenty of space and keep track of its location from a safe distance if possible.

And remember — seeing a snake doesn’t necessarily mean you have a snake problem. However, repeated sightings around a home may warrant looking at the conditions attracting snakes or their prey.

What started as a bird eviction quickly turned into a squirrel eviction, too.

The customer called after noticing birds nesting in their soffit—and they weren’t wrong. Starlings had taken advantage of a loose section of soffit and had an absolute field day, packing the area with nesting material.

But once we got on site and started investigating, we discovered active squirrel activity as well.

Wildlife problems are rarely as simple or straightforward as they first appear. Multiple species can take advantage of the same structure, sometimes through completely different entry points. And each species requires its own approach, with varying degrees of difficulty when it comes to eviction, removal, and exclusion.

That’s why a thorough inspection matters. Fixing the problem you can see is one thing. Finding and correcting everything else going on is where professional wildlife control makes the difference.

⚠️ Health Alert: The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts has confirmed a case of rabies found in a skunk near Lee Highway and Peaks View Lane in Botetourt County.

To help prevent the spread of rabies, everyone should:

🚨 AVOID contact with wild animals and domestic animals you do not know.

📢 REPORT injured or threatening animals.

💉 VACCINATE all of your dogs, cats and ferrets, and keep their vaccinations current.

🧼 WASH the wound with soap and water. Don’t panic.

Call your doctor and the local health department if you are exposed to an animal with rabies.

Call your veterinarian and local animal control if your pet is exposed to an animal with rabies.
