“I’ve Never Bid at an Auction Before. How Does This Work?”
If you have never participated in an auction before, you are not alone.
A lot of people are interested in auctions, but they hesitate because they do not know what to expect. They wonder:
“Do I have to be there in person?”
“What happens if I accidentally bid?”
“How do I know what I’m buying?”
“What if I win?”
“Is it complicated?”
The good news is that today’s auction process is easier than most people think.
Most of our auctions are conducted online, which means you can look at items, read descriptions, view photos, ask questions, register to bid, and place bids right from your phone, tablet, or computer.
Here is the basic process:
First, you browse the auction catalog. Each item, property, vehicle, piece of equipment, or group of items will have photos and a description.
Next, you register to bid. This usually takes just a few minutes. Registration helps keep the auction fair and secure for everyone.
Then, you place your bid. You can bid the current amount, or in many cases, you can enter your maximum bid and let the system bid for you only as needed.
When the auction begins closing, each item has a countdown. If someone bids near the end, the bidding may extend for a short period. This is called a “soft close,” and it gives everyone a fair chance, similar to a live auction where the auctioneer says, “Going once, going twice…”
If you are the high bidder when the bidding closes, congratulations. You won.
After that, you will receive instructions for payment and pickup. Every auction has specific terms, so it is important to read them before you bid.
Auctions are not just for dealers or experienced bidders. They are for anyone looking for opportunity, value, unique items, real estate, equipment, vehicles, business assets, estate items, and more.
The best way to get comfortable is simple: watch an auction, browse the catalog, and learn the process. You do not have to bid the first time. But once you understand how it works, you may find that auctions are one of the most exciting ways to buy.
